im thinking about getting a sporty stainless backbox for my 1996 214si but am worried that it will mess up the running of it.

i had a vauxhall corsa which i brought a stainless "tuneable" exhaust for,i must admit it was a cheapy one(£50) and ended up paying another £80 to have it custom welded to fit my corsa..so much for universal fitting!! the thing is that it messed up my car no end,the fuel consumption went throught the roof and it lost alot of power and it stank to high heaven and it sounded like a wet fart.my car was never the same after i had it fitted.

a mate of mine had a jap exhaust fitted to his pug 306 and suffered from low compression and high emissions and spent a fortune getting it all sorted but still the fuel consumption is about 25% higher than it used to b4 it was fitted

ive seen a few on ebay for around the £100 mark, sportex if i remember correctly.being a better make and already made to fit straight on my rover is it worth getting or should i just stick wiv the original factory fitted exhaust?

Stick with the original item. You'll need to inform your insurer about any exhaust modifications and it'll add £££ to your annual premiums. You won't recover the money when it comes to resale, infact it may reduce the appeal of your car. Find a nice chrome tailpipe for your car, something from an MG ZR and fit that instead.

Well seeing as Jay27 has just bought the car I don't think he needs to start saving for his next motor.
If you want to mod the car mate that is up to you and it's your money. As long as you get a decent make exhaust for the car that is made to fit you shouldn't have any problems. Don't expect anything amazing to happen though. You may get a bit of a performance boost out of it or you may not. It will sound a lot better though.
I believe the K series benefits form these sorts of mods as it's a revvy engine.

I bought a cat back system from Milltek Sports for around £250. It fitted pefectly and has given the car a nice growl to it and a little bit of added performance.

Just be prepared to pay extra to your insurance company.
