How much smoke is "normal" from a 45 diesel?

This morning I went out and ended up climbing a hill straight away... being a little new to the car, in hindsight I was in too high a gear really, as I found out when I looked in the mirror and saw that the car was laying an enourmous smokescreen, much to the bewilderment of the poor honda behind me LMAO.

On the way back it was a lot better with higher revs and a hot engine.

Bearing in mind that I have the MAF sensor unplugged, how much smoke is "normal"?

Cheers

Chris.

If the MAF sensor is unplugged the ECU overfuels the engine and so you get smoke at low revs. As a general rule, a slight grey/black haze behind the vehicle is acceptable, whereas thick black clouds of smoke isn't.

Not noticed any performance issues other than those related to the MAF sensor and it's subsequent unplugging.

Will have a good poke around later to see if there are any obvious splits or anything though. If my new MAF doesn't sort the performance issue I'll know to look further lol.
