Slave 1 has had a bad day...

Well I set off this morning to work & as I was driving along the car suddenly started wobbling from side to side. At first I thought it was the wind but then the wobbling got worse so I pulled over & called the RAC.
An hour & a half later the RAC man came round & told me the bad news! Apparently the bearing on the driverside rear tyre is buggered! And he mentioned something about the ball bearings being shaped like easter eggs instead of round :dunno: and to make matters worse the rear offside tyre has picked up a nail as well.

So I'm looking at a replacement bearing & two new rear tyres! :banghead:

So hear comes the dreaded question - can someone please recommend a good set of rear tyres? I need maybe 3 or 4 options if possible so I can do some bargain hunting as I have no idea how I'm gonna be able to afford this! :sad2:
Also if anyone knows of anywhere that sells tyres at a good price either online or in Sussex I'd be very greatful.

Feeling quite down at the mo so any help would be really kind, thank you.

I always use Discount Tyres in Worthing. Have been a customer there for years with a variety of cars and they are first class. Give them a call and they will be able to give you options. Sorry your day got off to a bad start.

Thanks hun - appreciate the tip! I'll give them a call on monday morning! :broon:

I just got a full set of Toyo T1Rs fitted and balanced (and tracking checked) for ÂŁ240 all in from Redpath Tyres Ltd.

The Toyos come highly recommended, however their compound is slightly soft (giving excellent grip) and so they tend to wear quicker than the GSD2s (Goodyear)

Pete Vickerstaff and Andy Phillips Run on Marigoni Zetas and are impressed with cost, grip and wear.

The only other points I can add are never mix tyres on the same axle (as I'm sure you know ) and don't opt for the cheapest 'cause they may kill you!

Go for the best your budget will alllow......

I'm sure if you PM David (Aitketgate) he'll furnish you with all the info you need.

regards Jeff.
Thanks Jeff! :broon:

I like the idea of Toyos but not sure if I'll be able to afford them! I'll probably have to settle for middle of the range tyres as this was a completely unplanned expense!

Not heard anything about the Marigoni Zetas but will definitely PM Aiketgate & see what advice he can give!

Thank you so much!

P.S Tyres are 15 inch!

Edit : what size of wheels are on Slave1 ?

Hi Chic,

How much do you intend to spend?
Why do you need two new tyres?
David
Hi David!

Without sounding cheap I'm poor as hell at the moment (been borrowing money off my parents to do the weekly food shop!
Image
) so I'm just after the cheapest "good" tyres I can get but they don't have to be ouststanding!
Need two tyres because the offside rear's got a nail in it (& the tread is legal minimum) & another because I can't have non-matching rear tyres or something like that :dunno:

#13 ·
Thanks mate! :broon: Yeah the RAC man said it was in such a bad state the wheel could have come off at any time - which was a really scary thought!

He was literally rocking the wheel sideways & back with no effort with his hands!

Sorry to hear about your day, like someone said earlier it could have been much worse.

try this link for mobile fitter in your area.

http://www.etyres.co.uk/town-descriptions/tyres-brighton-sussex.htm

just type your details in.

good luck
I'll check the link - thanks for that mate! :broon:

Black Circles are showing ÂŁ69 for the Toyos.
Camskill charge ÂŁ50 delivered, but you've got to add fitting.

You could also match your front and back tyres, the Hankooks are not bad for price and performance. + then you'd have 4 matching tyres?

The Marangonis are ÂŁ66 fitted

Remember all these prices are web based, you can get better deals locally.
For instance the only other fitted price I can see on the web for the Toyo T1-R is ÂŁ74.

Try a local tyre fitting shop - Ask if they've got any special offers in that size. Mention the tyres discussed here, they may have them on special.

That's some solid advice thanks David!! I know a couple of local tyre shops so will get their numbers & give them a call monday morning. So from what I can gather the tyres I'm looking at are any of the following:

Goodyear NCT3
Goodyear Eagle F1 GDS2
Federal SS 535
Toyo T1-R
Marangoni Zeta Lineas
Falken Ziex ZE-912
Hankooks

Well that'll keep the local tyre shops busy with quotes all morning!

Must admit I'm still gutted about the unexpected expense but I'm feeling much better now I've had such great advice from everyone! At least I've got options & a day or two to shop around!

Thanks everyone!

Sorry to hear about your bad day Kara :sad2:

If it makes you feel any better, I need to buy 4 new tryes and a spare alloy this month or next due to North Weald  Think the front brake pads might need doing again as well  Still, at least they did Oulton and North Weald as well as my spirited driving :D

Yeah I have a funny feeling that nail in the tyre might have been picked up at North Weald!

I wish you good luck with everything at your end - you must be saving up like mad at the mo!

#37 ·
Thanks for the offer Steve but at the mo the F is sitting in a garage 40 miles from my house so I think they will probably work on it on mon to have back on tues so not only would it be difficult to get back there to give them the hub but it probably would lengthen the amount of time I am without a car. But thank you so much!! That's such a kind thought! I love ya to pieces!!

#40 ·
Ooh I forgot to mention that the RAC man also said the car was about 1 and a half inches lower on one side of the car! Any idea what this could mean? Is it bad? How do I correct it? :dunno:

Any advice would be nice!

#41 ·
Sounds like Hydragas problems..........of which I have little knowledge.

I know there are some cheap "bodge" fixes for some of these issues. Don't know much about costs for parts....:dunno:

I recommend a new thread.

Ok, Chic,

Two things -

Tyre list - Goodyear nct3s are no longer available.

Suspension - Check your suspension height. - centre of front wheel to the wheel arch (each side). 368mm +/-10mm. you'll need to find a garage that can pump up the suspension to this height. Ex-MGR garages can do it.

Also Russell has a suspension pump now.

Ok NCT3's are off the list then!

When you say centre of the front wheel do you mean where the MG badge is on the alloy?

Also is this Russell the hg man? If so, any ideas of cost for getting the suspension pumped?

Thanks Master! I'm greatful that I'm your apprentice!!

Thanks for the link & the review mate! They seem an excellent price I'll check them out! :broon:

Pity the car wasn't in Brighton, I could have replaced the bearing for you.

Would have given me the chance to try my new 10 ton workshop press... mmm new tools:drool:

 Yeah my girl is sitting in some garage in Crawley at the mo! :sad2:

#56 · (Edited)
Well I'm back from the garage with my girl & instead of paying ÂŁ145 for the bearing I ended up paying ÂŁ337!!!! :yikes: :sad2:
Ok I'm gonna say this & then run for the hills... it turns out that since I bought the car last October I've been driving around with a seized brake caliper!!!!

I know, I know, how the hell didn't I notice, what the hell is wrong with me, how did I not notice the breaks were permanently stuck on, I should be taken out back & shot but in my defence if you've had a problem with a car since the day you bought it you don't know something is wrong because you don't know what "wrong" feels like.

What disturbs me is that the garage I was using (Sussex Trade Centre) didn't notice the seized caliper when they replaced the brake discs!!!! Which scares the hell out of me! I asked them why my handbrake light stays on & they said it was nothing to worry about! :shake:

Anyhow ÂŁ337 later she is now fixed & I have to say I feel like I'm driving a different car... this is not the car I bought! It's so fast & responsive & accelarates so quickly & breaks smoothly & corners like a dream! I had know idea she was like this! I've fallen in love all over again!! :cloud9:

Okay going into hiding now... :sofa:

#60 ·
Not quite sure what to say Kara?!?................

I'm chuffed that your car is fixed, and I hope you can now differentiate between a good 'un and a baddie (both cars and garages..)

How did you get on with the tyres?
I know I was sooo shocked! But it's ok I learnt my lesson & am glad that everything went wrong safely as from the sounds of it it could have been a lot more dangerous!

I'm getting tyres fitted tomorrow in the end I went with Falken Ziex ZE-912's as they were the cheapest & money was definitely the deciding factor this time!

Will let everyone know how I find them handling wise!

:popcorn:Good time to point out I don't work for them, they are my bodyshops neighbours in a large industrial building.

Sorry to hear of your troubles,I remember saying at the time I hate recommending places in case something goes wrong.
I will be having a word or two tomorrow as not only is it shoddy, even if it was cheap, its bloody embarrassing for me :errx2: I would have thought it would have gone on the brake tester or a test drive after it's work.I will post their response accordingly.

I feel so responsible :(
Don't worry about it Cuz I don't blame you at all! As you said you don't work for them so you weren't to know what they were like! Please don't feel embarassed just do me a favour & promise me you won't recommend them to anyone else!

How did I miss this thread?
Glad Slave 1 is sorted now......fingers crossed that you have no more big expenditure for a long long time!
At least the seized caliper stopped you beating mine and Dan's times at North Weald
 Absolutely - woulda kicked your asses otherwise!

Glad it's all sorted Chic.

I once drove around with something stuck on................an I love bottom love sign(a bit cruder than that) a work 'mate' from Boot's blue tacked it to my rear number plate! She was always playing me up.

#64 ·
Yeah "shock" is putting it lightly! I spent 4 hours at work running around like a headless chicken screaming "Where the hell am I gonna get that much from"!!!!! Luckily my parents were really good to me & lent me the extra money until I can sell some stuff, which was damn good of them!

You're right though can't wait to see what fuel consumption is like! At least I'll save money in that respect!
