You and you're bleedin petrol threads supersonic! Opens up the arguments every time! Remember what happened last time? Yeah, you got told about moles and it mentally scarred you!!!!!!

"Despite not having a knock sensor you get an increase in power. Not as good as cars with knock sensors but still an increase none the less. The higher RON fuels have a greater mole, so they introduce more energy into the combustion process. Because of that the flash point is reduced, which is why you need to change your timing. But irrespective of whether you change your timing, the combustion process per unit is more powerful.

That said, you hit a point where detonation is too far out of synch and power suffers."

I don't see how an extra 3mpg can be called placebo.

I definetely agree with Steven. I have been using shell v power performanca 100 octan for two years and i will not change it unless we have higher octan number. There is definetely more kick in the higher revs then 95 octan plus it keeps the engine clean over time.

I know the bloke with this username but he can't even say half the words in your sales pitch, and drives his car like a pansy, I'll tell him theres an imposter on the forum, he'll probably come on and ask that you refrain from portraying him as someone with such elloquence and motoring acumen.:dddc:

(how's the bumper?)
Yeah don't know what happened there G, I've changed my password so that this elloquent, handsome, and downright talented inidividual doesn't managed to post this sort of reasoned vehicular poetry again.

Bumper still not fixed as I've been on holiday.....it's booked in for the 22nd though, and its a good excuse to get all the other stone chips and marks sorted out.

And just to pick up on something that was stated earlier in the thread:

Mate, you will get very little change in a TF or an F
In a K series it is a placebo!
Even a very little change is still a change, thus not a placebo. Seems you're contradicting yourself there!

Irellivant over here as the normal 95RON from most "major brand" retailers have the same detergant packages in them, the only thing you gain from the more expensive stuff is a higher Octane Number
MeGan doesn't like that Ethanol 99 stuff from Tesco. Whether I just got a bad batch or there was some crud in the nozzle I don't know, but she wasn't happy.

I used to use Optimax all the time when i first got the F and i had cash in my wallet (days long gone :( ).

I cna definately say MPG was better, to the point where the increased price was almost balanced out by ther increased MPG.

Never really noticed any difference in power.
I do occasioanlly bung in some optimax just to give things a clean. After all it works out cheaper spendin the extra on a tank full of optimax (or V) over normal RON that it would be to buy a bottle of redex

Curgy, are you sure the cheapo fuels have the SAME detergents as the V/ultimates???

Shell, BP and Texaco do I believe.

Unfortunatly I only have an Esso garage here

James other 95 ron from Shell available here does not have the same detergent package as the v power performance (or ferrari fuel as it is called here). That is why i always go for the ron 100. For your information it costs about 1.18 GBP per litre here.

......As has been noted about Vpower though, the petrol guage is dropping faster than normal too. Normally I would be regularly getting about 150miles to half a tank of Asda Unleaded, but as of today its verging on 120 miles to half a tank of Tesco 99, and I'm not utlising the cars potential anymore/less than I normally would! .......
How is this an advantage .......... to suffer a 20% degradation in fuel consumption for no increase in 'potential' seems to me to be quite the opposite of what is required i.e. more fuel to return the same performance can only draw the conclusion that the fuel is much worse!

I think thats what he's driving at. The old optimax did give you better MPG, as does Ultimate. They're saying the new Vpower gets supped like 20/20 at a bus shelter.

I've run through a couple of tankfuls of the Vpower now, and I'll be honest I've not noticed a performance increase, though I am probably not the best person to judge. It does seem to give me a fraction lower mpg, though its marginal (based on the 'how much petrol I need to fill up by method', which is full of inaccuracies). Since its a fair bit cheaper than BP Ultimate I'll probably stick with it for now.

Anyone know what detergents are in the Tesco 99 stuff?

cheers

My F didn't like the 99 Ethanol stuff, BUT that was just before I changed the plugs which were admittadly, knackered to hell, I would guess it'll be OK now.

I do know that on certain cars (old R19 16v's are one) go like stink with that stuff in it!

I take back the 'guzzling' bit back! I went from Gosport to Leeds and back today (RT of 545miles) with a tankful of said stuff. cruising speed of 85 average, I filled up on way home and got 41.8 mpg. Not to be sniffed at!!

I might try a tank of the V next time I'm running on empty then

I am not sure if it a National trend but around here many of the small garages are closing down particularly in the rural areas, maybe in the future we will only have supermarket petrol avaiailable !

In my coupe (1.6 k-series engine), I noticed smoother running (probably placebo), but more MPG - about 5%. So not worth the extra 5p per litre in my opinion.

I've also just serviced the car, new air filter, oil filter, oil, plugs and leads. Feels like its running a lot better, with faster acceleration - but, agian, I think it is 90% placebo.

My car is on 108k miles, and I change the oil and oil filter every 6k - major service every 12k, coolant (and break fluid) every 24k, new fuel filter every 48k and cam belt every 60k. Plus various checks - replacements. Runs really well :)

PS. Annual mileage about 13-14k
