That is potentially a problem. When metal turns to rust it occupies twice the original volume and so it can exert a "jacking effect". Google "oxide jacking".
With no warning at all, I got onto my Rover 600 one day to find a huge crack in the glass, which started at the edge. Sure enough when the guy came to fit a new screen, there was a small area of rust at the by the edge of the crack.
