Hello All
paid a deposit on a 2000 conn se 2.5 v6 from a guy through ebay, the car has 95000 miles and a fsh, also the cambelts were done three weeks ago,the car drives lovely, my query is that he has owned the car for 15mths and he does approx 100 miles a day, he said the coolant fan has never worked and has never over heated as he does motorwaymiles every day, should i be worried, also his wife damaged the door in asdas on saturday, before i saw the car, causing a indentation about 12" long is this easily repaired and will the body repair and paint job be easy to match up ,with the slab like doors being so smooth, what would the approx cost for this work to be done, by a professional, the car is dark blue with all the toys the deal is £2900 with the guy putting a full yrs mot and another 6mths road tax, is this a good deal or should i walk away.

Non operating fan might be ok when you're moving but as soon as you're in traffic coming into summer ....super dangerous.... common fault shared with bmw...can be expensive if entire fan unit replaced. Take that off the price and the bodywork cost ?

Be aware that even though you have bought this car on eBay, you have entered into a legally binding contract. However, you can claim he hasn't fulfilled the contract if he did not mention when selling that the fan did not work or if he also did not mention the damage if that damage occurred before the end of sale. You would also be entitled to your deposit back as the deposit was left on a particular vehicle in a particular condition. hope this helps

The fan issue needs sorting, I would check that myself:

Switch on air con, the fan will come on whilst the car is stationary if there's nothing wrong. Get out of car and lift the bonnet to hear it better. If it's not on then = money, unless you're handy with electrics or fitting new unit.

Look at colour of coolant with engine running, you'll see it trickle thro expansion tank. Check oil if poss, have a look/sniff of filler cap, there'll probably some oil on it to give an indication of colour/?mayo.

It sounds like a good price, but you need to see the belts + servicing receipt (+ I would think about checking out where they did it e.g. phone and see if you could get an estimate for the job, it needs specialist tools to do properly) and consider whether you want the car enough to justify paying out on the body work/ pushing him to sort it.

However, my question would be why did he have belts done to then sell so quick? I would proceed with caution.

I would be very worried!
As has been said, it should always be running with the A/C switched on. Changing the belts on a KV6 is very expensive, why pay to have them changed and then sell the car?
The fan is not necessarily needed on motorway runs but I cannot see that sometime in 15 months he hasn't been in heavy traffic or a motorway jam when it was needed.
I wonder if he was told that the fan was not working by the garage that did the belts, when he found out how much a new fan unit would cost, he decided to sell the car.
Did he volunteer the info about the fan? so if you went back to him, he could say that you bought it knowing that it didn't work.

Hello All
Thanks for the advice, speaking to a mechanic today and yourselves on the forum, i decided not to buy the car, which is a shame as it was a lovely driver, i lost my deposit which i was expecting but better that, than the cost of a new engine if the car had overheated (owner still insists he has had no problems ) i think i had rose tinted glasses on when i drove it ,because it was the first time i had sat and driven in one and i was mega impressed with the smooth purr of the engine ,then the fine roar on exceleration and how dignified it felt, but alas i am still searching for a rover 75 up here in scotland they are like hens teeth, i am cheesed of now, and desperate to own one of rovers finest cars ever made, again many thanks for the information provided.

The Guy seemed to be very geniune about the details of the car and to be honest i did not bid for it and i asked him there and then to cancel the auction and i was going to buy it on the spot as i was pretty impressed with the car but after listening to yourselves on the forum commonsense told me to walk away so to be fair i think he was quite right to hold on to the deposit.

You made the right choice there my man.

Who knows how much damage has been done to the head gasket while that car was sitting in traffic. Garage probably told him HGF was due any day and hence the sale!

Sit tight, one will turn up soon :)

Not 100% sure how "legally Binding" anything is on Ebay!
Ebay themselves take zero action other than an electronic slap on the wrist which is not exactly anything to worry about.

It would be the seller on his own at his own cost that would have to pursue any non payment, I think most of the hype some people put in their adds is well ott and often very funny and in many cases plain childish

The phrase "no scammers plase" always make me chuckle as if scammers are going to be polite and say ok I will leave you alone :)

ive just bought one of those!!!! they were very helpful and any auto lec can adjust the wires to fit any 75.
Not sure that would be ok for every variant of ZT and 75 I am sure the CDT has more fan speeds than the petrol versions, worth investigating though
