I have just bought a rover coupe vvc 1.8 and have noticed that the engine makes a knocking noise when it is hot. The noise isnt there when the engine is cold and seems to disappear when revved above 2000 rpm. What could this noise be? I am concerned that it will cost a lot of money. Please reply.

Does it come from inside the cabin, but can't be heard under the hood?

If so try putting your hand on the purge valve on top of the charcoal canister (big black cylindrical thing against the bulkhead) when it starts doing it.
Can you feel it pulsing? Unhook the canister from the bulkhead for a mo then see if you can still hear it.

the noise can be heard outside aswell - it comes from around the back of the engine - near the injector housing or rear cam.
