Hi guys, first time post so please bear with me.
I have a 1994 rover 623 gsi.
Air con was regassed late 2019 and all worked well.
I recently had to remove the centre console to replace a few blown bulbs, and now my air conditioning isnt working.
The green light comes on when i press the button, but i can't hear the compressor kick in.
The wiring is connected to the button- at least it feels fully connected when reaching up from behind the radio! It must be, otherwise the light wouldn't come on??
What checks can i do before i go back to halfords as they will only check for leaks......
Hope there is somebody out thrre still running a rover 600!
Thanks

When was the last time the AC was run; do you run it weekly throughout the year as advised?
The AC gas circuit has a pressure sensor in it which will prevent the compressor from switching on if the pressure is too low. If you disconnect the two pin cable from it, then it should show continuity (zero ohms). On my 620 petrol, standing at the front of the car, the pressure switch is just a few inches past the steering fluid reservoir on the RHS, mounted on an aluminium pipe about 6 or 7mm diameter.

Hi all, just got my air con regassed today, which solved my problem.
Question is, is it normal for this to happen?
It was re-gassed in july 2019.
There were no leaks reported, in fact no issues at all other than most of the gas not being there, so where did it all go?

No that's not right. I think you'd reasonably expect say 4 years from a refill. The only loss in a good system is caused by the gas slowly diffusing out of the hoses, which happens in all cars, even new ones. It's been common for some time when re-gassing to add fluorescent dye which will leave stains wherever it leaks out. Did you have that done?

My experience is that air-con specialists tend to do the best work, garages ~ may be, the big quickie chains - no way!

Hi,
I took it to the Halfords auto centre that regassed it in 2019, I know Halfords dont normally have a good reputation, but at least they are a well known chain and not just a back street effort - no offence to any small garages operating off the main road.
I'll just have to keep an eye on her and hope she lasts longer than a year!
Thanks for the help anyway 👍

Yes, Halford's reputation is poor. You know that you can see the fluid through the glass window at the top of the drier when the system is running - it should appear fluorescent green if it has dye - can you see that? Also, I would ask Halfords did they put the dye in - a bad service agent will skimp putting it in - I always specifically check with them that they are adding both dye and lube. Unfortunately, at this age, air-con problems may be an issue on almost any car.

To see the stains at their clearest, it helps to have a torch that has some UV light (as used to check banknotes), and some UV goggles, but I think you can pick those up fairly cheaply.
