Rover 600 - FAQ's information

Hi all, as i also own a 600, i thought it would be a good idea to list together the common issues with the 600 range, for owners by owners sort of thing.

If people can list a usual problem with an answer it would be excellent, as i can compile a list and then put a structured closed sticky at the top of the page for people to see.

Or if someone has a how to guide, i can put these up as well, anything counts! good if your technically minded ;)

Please feel free to post them up, (useful information only please). If anyone has any info or questions etc.. contact me anytime.

Regards

nylon and rubber lubricant is what I use. Holts do it in a little spray can which is good. Or there are other sources though, I think maplin also do one. Failing that WD40 or GT85? would be better than nothing.
What about the alarm? ive had nothing but trouble with my 618's alarm in damp weather. anyone know of a fix for that? ive disconnected all the sensors (i think) but the thing will not shut up :***: Oh and hello ppl, this is my first post here :bgrin2:
Hi Nerk, welcome to the forums bud, post a thread in the 600 section with the problem and you'll be able to hopefully get a better response there :)

thanks that post you wrote was wonderfull, cause every problem you just described i have on my rover 620sli m reg-98k. now am pretty sure that those problems are more than likely exist since am not the only one who's the got them! and i seem to have a dodgy air flow sensor, the car does not have a constant rev rev on ideal! and has sudden surges of power when puling away in third and fourth gear!

whats more the issues describe seem to have a pattern of turning up when the mileage reaches about 100k miles!

I fix the hand brake on the near side, just for the off side to start messing me about now. Got the same symptoms as before, ie the hand brake won't engage on that wheel. I had to get a caliper from a scrap yard last time, looks like I'll be doing that again.
I'll let you know how it goes.
I know this has already been said BUT THAT BLOODY GEARBOX!!! had my alternator clutch and Gearbox all replaced/recond in the space of 3 weeks!!!!!

But now my car feels faster than ever and much nicer to drive!!
error codes

can anyone help.i have a rover 620gsdi that keeps cutting out.diagnostic code-134 wiper trav sensor/needle sensor.can anyone tell me what it means.garage couldn't tell me as they dont have all the codes.thanks
Ok, I said I would post up on the hand brake progress.
First off I slackened the HB cable adjuster inside the car.
I got under the car with my spanners and released the hand brake cable from the offending caliper, I then got a spanner on the self adjuster spindle and proceeded to waggle it back and forth using some WD40, after a while it felt looser and I hooked up the cable again, replaced the gunk shield and sat in the car pumping the brake pedal, for what seemed like ages.
Periodic testing of the resistance on the HB showed that progress was being made. After I felt that my leg had dropped off, I tightened the adjuster and drove the car up the road to a steep hill (these are not in short supply in Plymouth!) and in a moment-of-truth style test stopped the car, applied the HB and took my foot gently of the footbrake...And the car stayed put!
Hurrah!
Fixed.
600 hand brake myth disspelled for evermore.

Untill the next time.
Rover 600 GSDi '97 ABS Fault ?

Always serviced and never let me down in 9 years and 109K until I passed it to my daughter. New Starter motor last week and boxing day brakes seized on front passenger side. RAC man came out to me on the M25 and failed to force the brake piston back up the cylinder, it was rock solid until he lossened the bleed nipple. The cylinder looked clean so I now suspect the ABS not the servo as the problem only on that wheel. Is there a valve that can stick ? I have driven it slowly home now without braking, (not fun), does anyone have any suggestions please ?

Les
A faulty rubber hose or dented steel brake line can also cause the same symtoms.

Yes it would, thank you, I have now checked externally and although original all look in good condition. The problem wheel of course was the nearside front which is only inches from the ABS unit. Les

I said "servo" in original and I meant master cylinder. Les
I also have this problem. I drive a 620i with 270,000 miles on it! I brought it to my mechanic and he told me to change the inlet manifold. I havent a clue about engines so I have to thrust him! But I noticed when the car was idleing mad he pulled out a lead of some sorts from the ECU unit and it idled perfectly but when driven with the lead out it started conking out so thats not an option. Also when lt heats up its fine but if im driving in cold weather the engine temp drops and I have the idle prob again. It also spews out white smoke first thing in the morning. All help welcome as I have this car 10 years and dont want to scrap it just yet!
courtesy lights on my 600 wont come on when doors opened tjey work if switch is put on permanent , the only time they have worked correctly was a damp winter night 18 months ago, any ideas !!
Better off starting another post with this question, but it is likely to be faulty door switches.
with regards to the windows I foudn the best thing to use/do is get some silicone grease (the stuff plumbers use) then whip off the door cards and smear some of the grease in the runners inside the car then slide the windows up and down a few times, also doesn't hurt to put a little silicone grease on the runner that the little plastic wheels run in at the bottom of the window. I did this just before crimbo and my windows are still running as smooth as when I greased them up.

Check the courtesy door switches, are the fixing screws tight and if you 'flick' them in/out does the light work? Could be poor earth on the fixing screw. The switches are easy to replace.

its rare that the motors break its the arms that bend and theres plastic clips that also break which can be replaced by washers . Take door card off and have a look before buying new ones
