Hi Guys,

Yesterday I did a 180 mile drive and when I came off the motorway and stopped at the traffic lights, I noticed that the car was idling high. It usually idles just below 1000 revs but it was idling at 2000-2500. When I was driving it, when I changed gear the engine speed increased. Of course when I'm travelling at 30 miles and over it's not a problem as I'm at 2000-3000 revs anyway. What could have caused this and what can i do?

Thanks in advance,

Regards,

Chris

Does it do it if you rev the engine in neutral? Could be sticking throttle body or maybe just needs a reset of the stepper.
Ignition in position 2 then press gas pedal five times. All the way down and all the way up. Then turn off and then start the car. The revs may wander for a few secs then should settle.

Thanks Ashy.

Yes, it is like it in Neutral and when I rev the engine the revs increase and drops down gradually to 2000. When I press the clutch in the engine speed increases slightly too. Will try your suggestion though.

Hi Guys.

Regarding the high idle speed and increase in engine speed when I change gear. I have checked the throttle body and reset the stepper myself and taken it to a mechanic and still it is doing it.

However on closer inspection today I noticed a build up of coolant at the inlet manifold. This must be leaking so I presume the inlet manifold gasket has gone. Would this cause the high idling?

Regards,

Chris
