Hi, Ive had my car from new 1994,and it's been a good un. I am a bit mystified with the clutch problem that I have. I have gone through 2 cables in the last 10,000miles and when recently changing the head gasket, i noticed another needed to be changed. The cables aren't snapping but the plastic cap half way down the cable is breaking up. On changing the cable this time an only just acceptable clutch is obtained when the pedal is fully depressed to the floor, as if the cable isn't auto adjusting. There is no clutch slip and it has covered 88,000miles. Any ideas? Thanks.

It could be that the clutch has now just worn to the point where there is not enough adjustment left.

There could also be some rust/gunge in the operating mechanism causing the stiffness which leads to the cap breaking.

It tends to happen to the Peugeot/Citroen cable operated clutches on cars like BXs and 406s
