Rover 200/400 - My heater Fan doesn't work on speeds 1,2 & 3 - "How Do I?"

We get this question pop up many times.
Here's a short article on "How to" replace the heater fan resistor pack on a 1995> Rover 400

Remove the glovebox. Two 8mm bolts secure it at the lower hinged edge. Remove the bolts, press the catch and out comes the glovebox. Magic!

Rover 400 Heater Resistor prices and Vendor.

If you go to www.rezpax.com they sell you the resistors to replace them yourself, or you can send them your broken unit and they will fix it and send it back to you the same day! They have either the open coil (like the originals) which have been made to be less brittle. You can also buy ceramic resistors here. To buy and fix the open coil resistors yourself will cost you ÂŁ5.89p + 69p p&p. To send your broken unit to be fixed and sent back the same day will cost ÂŁ10.20p + ÂŁ1.49p p&p. If you order this part complete from rover-link it will cost you ÂŁ47.00! So it's worth visiting rezpax! The open coil resistor part number is Rezpax OCR001. I hope that this helps.

i dont know the part number sorry but i got one a few weeks ago and it was about ÂŁ26 or ÂŁ27 if i recall correctly!
For some bizarre reason i thought id read this thread and i stared in disbelief that somone would pay this amount of money for something you could nick from a scrapyard!
When mine packed up I got 3 good working resistor packs for a fiver!!!!!!!!
That was 2 years ago and I'm still on the first one!

Excellent illustrations Major - Thank you.

As it happens, one by one the five speeds on my 1985 Montego Turbo's heater fan packed up this winter. Speed number 4 the last to do so. I know access means complete removal of the whole fascia which is about half an hours work. Having done that, as I'm handy with the soldering iron I now wonder is there a relatively easy resistor fix or do I wait for one to turn up in a local breakers and get that?

Any advice here appreciated.

Noisy heater

Dont suppose someone could help me with the same problem on a 214si. only works at 3 and 4 in SO's car and it is very annoying as 3 and 4 are quite loud!

cheers and happy New Year
I have just replaced the resistors on my 400. My heater was also noisy on 3 and 4. I undid the 3 phillips screws that hold the heater motor in place (these are under the heater). I found that the fan was full on leaves! I removed the leaves and now the heater is silent and twice as powerful. For the resistors and instructions go to www.rezpax.com. They only cost ÂŁ5.89 + 69p P&P. I hope this helps you mate, HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Well done Major!

Broon, the procedure is the same for the 200 series.

sjc59, here are the part numbers.......

200 series.......... JGM10002

400 series.......... JGM100050
New part number for 200 series.......... JGH10002

Perhaps a similar change for the 400 version.

Thanks to Dr. Dave - I followed your pictures and all sorted.

New part seems more robust than before. I'll consider the 10W wire wound resistors next time - paid ÂŁ36.73 (inclusive) for genuine MG Rover part.

Can't believe I paid over ÂŁ70 ex VAT two years back to have the dealer replace it when it's a 5 minute job (includes the two minutes to get the tools from the boot! ;) ) I recommend using a small 8mm socket or a nut driver as a ring spanner can get a bit fiddly...

I remember replacing those resistors years ago! Split the heater box itself to replace it!

Not sure about any workarounds though, John.
Cool thread Major! :bgrin2:

Everytime I see one of the resistor packs I think they look really primitive, with just the bendy metal on there to increase resistance. Now as you've probably gathered I know very little about electrics etc but surely something a bit more hi-tech can be thought up, maybe using proper resistors or something? Maybe a good mod?? Do the new rovers like the 45/75 use this style resistor pack?

Also, would resoldering the 'springs' fix a blown one?

:D

To me the same problem with the fan. Question: Does all the same resistor you connect? I, II, III positions, one 1.5 ohm 10W resistance? As far as I understand forum talked of the need for connection lygegreÄŤiai two resistor that to get a higher power 14W. Originally resistance should be 0,27 - 0.75 to 1.48 ohms.
Hi Paul

My heater pack has failed and i'm going to follow your tutorial :) but i'm stuck already LOL.

Sorry....might not be too clear...

you will need a total of 3 resistors.....I gave four alternative part numbers..

so 3 of the first....Maplin H1R....OR 3 of Farnell 3270555 OR etc...etc.

you dont need one of each!

I have sent you a PM which might help..... :D

***The resistor values have been superceeded by ones closer to the manufacturers original values, please see posts further in this thread.***

Ahhh - thats me being thick more than you not being clear.. I didn't even notice that there were only 3 resistors in the pic! doh..
