my beloved rover 416i 1995 seems to accelerate by itself, it only happens when the enginge is slighty warm (maybe 15mins urban driving) or long periods on the motorway. It almost feels like the accelerator is sticking, but its happening intermitantly.

It will rev up to maybe 4000 revs when its in neutral or 1st or 2nd, sometimes when im in the traffic and stopped at zebra crossings i frighten people because they think i am revving impatiently at them, the only way to get rid of it is to put it in 1st and pull the clutch out almost fully, with the handbrake engaged, this lowers the revs though you can still feel the car pulling, this is a pain in the ass and dangerous.

could it be my fuel injectors are dirty or something else? would it be cheap to fix this??

thanks a lot and sorry for the stupid questions im a total novice
