The police have set up a dipping centre at the end of my road. Its been there for a week now.Up to now i,ve only seen them stop vans and dip the tanks.I think its a big fine for using it.

Don't even think about using it.

It stains your engine, and is highly illegal.

You will probably have to pay lots in fines/duties etc, maybe even a prison sentence.

Very bad move, red diesel is not duty paid for road use, so if you get stopped and dipped its not the police but customs and exicise, belive me, you DO NOT mess with C&E. If caught they seize the vehicle on the spot, and you go do porridge for Tax evasion, guarenteed.

BUT,

your chances of getting dipped are very low, especially if you drive a new'ish family car. I've driven a diesel for 12 years now and never been dipped, but mate with a manky old Land Rover has been dipped 3 times in 3 years.

So basically, its a small risk with a big consequence if you do get caught. The choice is yours.

Using red is great! It means that those who do and get caught get their cars confiscated and I get to buy them very very cheap indeed! I've made a fair few bob from them!:bgrin2:

i got caught using it & got a £250 fine for having it in the tank & another £250 for driving it on the road but had 24 hours to drain the tank ,the fine is also on the spot fine & if you cant pay they impound the car ,if i were you i wouldnt bother because unless you can get away with it for about 2 years the fine out weighs the savings.

The Powers that are very slick, If you get dipped it's game over, no amount of sad eyes will get you off.

Dad used to stick a bit in his Escort as his new wife's son ran a few artics and there was a huge tank of it in the Garden (wouldn't you be tempted), Got a knock on the door 6am one sunday morning........Oh dear

£250 fine for my dad should have been £500 ( he's 74 and even they realised he was just saving a few bob, even helped him drain the tank of the Escort)
Don't know what the lorry fine was but it wasn't small,

If you are determined to cheat customs and excise, why not install a two-tank system - one with a filler in the boot for red diesel that the dip-testing copper wont know about, and smaller one in place of the normal fuel tank with a little legal diesel in it?

They regularly dip the tanks on wagons, in fact some people fit Ghost tanks inside the main diesel tank, so when dipped they fetch out normal derv lol!

I think depending on how serious it is, they can and will take the car and crush it.

They dont even have to dip your tank, they will pull up to a site have the gates shut and put litmus paper on the exhaust, then pick the ones they want and dip them.

A two tank system will still leave staining to parts that get red on them-the pump etc,the ira used to put acid in red to get rid of the dye but how good they were at neturalising it after??

Red diesel is also less well refined than the road stuff.

i use a two tank system and run commerically bought biodiesel in the main tank, the bio is in rowley regis and is 75p per ltr,i`ll fish out a adddress tommorow.

A mate of mine who used to drive a refrigerated 7.5 tonner said that he had a 2 tank system or something. The condensing unit ran on Red Diesel.

Yeah, i drive a class 2 HGV, with a fridge on the back.

The fridge uses red diesel, and the lorry itself uses normal white diesel.

They auction them off if they are worth anything..For example, I bought a T reg 600 SLDi with leather for £265 last year, and sold it for shall we say loads more after MOTing and taxing it. A great place to get megga cheap cars from. Theres loads go through that are missing things like fuel tanks which I assume come from smuggling rackets...
