The original 'pony car' was designed as America's answer to those pesky Euro-peen sports-cahs...

News: Ford raises Mustang production
21 Mar 05 13:53

We can't get it over here - officially, at least - but Americans are rushing to get their hands on the new-generation Ford Mustang. Ford announced today that it is upping production of the must-have coupe and roadster to 192,000 this year (80,000 up on last year's figures) and that the Mustang now accounts for nearly half of all sports cars sold in the US. A Ford spokesman said that it "is the hottest car in the industry, and its performance on the street and in the showrooms is beating everyone's expectations. Sales are up more than 45 percent over last year and V8 GT and convertible model demand is so strong that we haven't been able to build enough. We're planning to increase production well beyond what was initially planned. This will allow us to sell 160,000-165,000 Mustangs in the US this year."

The new Mustang is proving to be very reliable at four problems per 100 vehicles. Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky should also sell pretty well here. Mustang is actually a 2+2, whether in coupe or convertible form. If MGR and Alfa Romeo don't get moving into our market, they could be too late as far as market share is concerned. :2c:

No they won't ever be too late, as times and tastes change and the Mustang will age.

Maybe the Mustang will be the car to assit in Ford reducing its $60+ Billion debt. Mind you this is nothing compared to GM's $120+ Billion.

Is the mustang V8 unit that is used in the MG ZT the same as that fitted to this Mustang in question? It's just that it has been slated in certain quarters for being so old it was "made of stone" when fitted to the ZT. I suspect that UK jornos wouldn't be quite so cruel to the US mustang (car) if it was made available here.

Of course they'd be kinder to the engine in the Mustang than they were to the installation of it in the MG ZT260. They seem to judge American cars by a whole different set of criteria to European cars.

A case in point is Top Gear's attitude to the Dodge SRT-10 'Viper' and the Mustang - they admitted that both were very crude and fairly rubbish by any objective measure, certainly when compared to European cars, but they loved them anyway.

saw thousands of Mustangs in Florida last week, they cant be that expensive then?
If you went to live in the US and took 12,000 UKP with you, you could buy one.

Even on a personal import you could get one into this country for probably 17k.

Unbelievable isn't it!

The US is amazing for car prices. I'd have two if I lived there :)

My cousin has the current/last model 'Stang - wouldn't be surprised if he's getting a new one fairly soon... Mind you, he's gotta wait for his new number plate: currently MU51ANG, come late 2007 he might have MU57ANG... Git's got an immaculate MGC Roadster too... And two houses paid up in full... And is only in his thirties... Damn that 'slightly floral' confirmed batchelor lifestyle and Oxford education. :irked:

Does this mean americans are finally losing interest in SUV's? Bet the hippies are well pleased to see them moving out of those horrible ozone burning, war creating, child crushing, wheeled oil rigs into small economical mustangs

nope SUV's are still uber-rife over there,

watching cars go past you will see 1 SUV, 1 Pickup, 1 "old" boxy lincoln/caddy/etc/1 sports car ('tang, Grand Am, Eclipse)

and then the cycle repeats itself
