Just a bit confused, Ive had a few rovers, all k series engines, and they have all had rubber timing belts.......

I was looking at a rover 75 for sale, with the 1800 k series (n/a) and I was told by the seller that it had a timing chain as apposed to a timing belt like other K series have.......

can anyone clear this up? do the newer K series have a timing chain??

Also does the Kv6 use timing belts or chains??

cheers, (confused) mike :s

Diesels have chain, 4 cylinder petrols have belt (K series), V6 (have 2 belts (IIRC)

Put simply, that 1.8 petrol you are going to buy, does not have a chain, it has a belt. Large plastic cover to the left hand side of the engine at the end (opposite to gearbox end) is the cam belt cover!

Timing chains tend not to have these plastic covers as they run in a 'aplash zone' of oil, whereas belts are the total opposite, oil is not a good idea for them, and belts run outside of the main engine casing, hence the 'external' cam belt cover.

Also belts require to be changed more frequently (generally) than chains hence the cover for ease of access, as opposed to the internal situation with chains.

Hope this helps

CAM (no pun intended!)

Yea, i know the way it all works, I hadnt seen the engine so when I was told it had a timing chain I got a bit confused cos I didnt think they had updated the K series to that extent...........

Cheers for the info :)

Yet another person/dealer selling a Car/Rover who thinks they know all about them. I had a dealer tell me that all Rover engines were Hondas.

As said all K series are belts, VVC has 2 belts, KV6 has 3, 75 diesel (BMW unit) has a chain.

iirc the KV6 2 litre has two belts and the 2.5 has three belts. Given I have the 2.5 I really am not looking forward to my cam belt change service :yikes:

Why would the 2.0 have 2? Or whats the 2nd belt do? It has 3 belts (well on the 2.5 anyway) 1 for top/bottom end timing (usual place) and 1 on each bank at the other end. The 2.5 is basically a stroked 2.0 :D

I think changing the main belt would be like one of those maze puzzles!! :D

Sorry Dave! Brain death or old age-you decide;) Just goes to show the dangers of being on the forums while at work:) It must be 3 on both :O

Having just had my 2.5 belts replaced, make sure you get written quote off the garage before you take it in. I would'nt use rover to expensive (around ÂŁ750). I phoned around a few garages for quotes before choosing, (not the cheapest). It cost me ÂŁ376.00, that was including 3 belts, pre tensioner and idler bearing labour and vat. Think i got a good deal. The changing requires 9 special tools and not garages have them. The task is qouted as taking 6.9 hrs with air condioning in the manual and my garage took 15.5 hrs to complete, so that is why i say get a qoute first so yuo dont get ripped off.
