Hi,

I'm looking to replace the gearbox on my 1997 Rover 114 Sli, as it grinds specifically when shifting both up, and down, into second gear.

I know it currently has a R65 gearbox in it, and many other Rover models use this gearbox. Now, I was wondering if I would have to replace the current R65 gearbox with one that has come out of another 114, or can I replace it with any other R65 gearbox out of a different model? That is, is there any intrinsic difference between the R65's in different models?

Thank you!

I think that basically they will fit, but the gear ratios may change if you get an R65 out of a car with a bigger engine. They are likely to be lower geared if out of a 1.1 than one out of a 1.4, for example. This may be fine for you, or it may be annoying. Some one who’s knows more detail may be along soon.

I changed the g/b in my 214 some years back. Heres the story...

Thank you for the helpful reply! I think that gives me enough to go on now.

Would you know the history of a gearbox from another car though, can you get yours rebuilt at a specialist instead?

The Metro Owners club may be a good source for advice and also the Rover 200 400 owners club.

The BMW series 1 Mini until 2004 used the same gear box so there are people who specialise in them from what I have seen on Mini forums.

I know this is a few weeks ago, but I know the gear linkage lever (or could be clutch...was a long time ago...the one with the counterweight on it) on top of the GB is different between the 200/25 and the Metro/100.
