Poor mpg in my Rover 75 CDTi Tourer?

Hi Guys,

My 2002 CDTi (later XPower upgrade) 75 Tourer seems to have really poor fuel economy. I only really do town driving, particularly during rush hour but I only get 22mpg.. this isn't far off my old 4 litre petrol XK8..!! surely this isn't right? I've recently had a new (well, 2nd hand) turbo fitted (not by main dealer) and now its gone down from around 24-26mpg. Something to do the fuel mix maybe? Any advice appreciated!?

Cheers!

Hi Pete.. No, not really much smoke (but then I've never had a diesel before, so not sure what's normal!), maybe a bit on acceleration. Now I've got the new turbo, acceleration is really good! Was rubbish before..

I was looking at somthing else when I put M64. But you are correct it is the M47.

The problem is we dont have much to go on as to the condition of the car or anything. All we know is it's a 2002 with the X-Power ECU flash upgrade.

We dont know it's miliage, service history wheather it's a man or an auto.

To be honest I hate the BMW diesel. I know why it was used in the 75 but quite frankly it's not all that good in my oppinion.

It's too thirsty, to slow (in stock form) and has to many conponets that let it's reliabilty down. Plus if I buy a British car I would like to think it had a British engine in it.

But I rekon even Ron could be baffled with the lack of info hear.

ok ok, don't have a go at me - it was my first post!:tacpb:

To clear things up then...! The car is in excellent condition generally. Its done 70k on a 52 plate. It has a full service history.. all Rover apart from the last one 10 months ago.. and as I stated its an auto.

I still think 22mpg is too low and something must be amiss here.. I might as well be driving my XK!

A few extra bits of info then for good measure.. it developed a massive oil leak over the last few months.. loosing about 1 litre per week mainly through the turbo area and up through the dipstick - too much pressure coming from the crankcase? Breathers proved to be ok, oil sump filter was ok - leaves the rings?! OMG! anyway the oil leak has gone now I've got the new turbo put on..

All you guys, thanks so much for the info.. seems to prove that I should be getting more than 22mpg.. shall I take it to the main dealer to give it a once over?

My ZT-T CDTI (re-map) does twixt 36 & 42 thrashed on long trips on Irish roads (and until recently with blown exhaust flexi) so reading previous posts I'm not to disappointed. I do get a little envious when my friend visits in his A6 1.9 which has more fuel in the tank at the end of a trip than it started with !!:daft:(according to the on board trip puter)
but it isn't as quick and handles like a sack of spuds compared with the MG. (and cost him allot more money for the same age vehicle with more miles on the clock. Oh and his cam is driven by a piece of knicker elastic !)

The bmw m47 diesel engine should be and is economical. Although mine's a manual, I regularly get 35-40 mpg round town and mid 50's motorway. (measured by tank to tank not computer.)
And yes, I have a ron box fitted.

The worst it's done really hammering it was 34mpg. The auto boxes usually cost you 4mpg approx.

So if you're doing in the mid 20's to the gallon there's something amiss!

Ditto if not slightly better on mine (2002 reg Conn SE manual with 122000 under its belt). Ron's Tu3B, mafam, turbo spring mod, air intake mk2 mod and EGR bypass. So it doesn't hang about either.

poor mpg

How many miles do you do at a time, a cold diesel engine has really poor fuel economy the engine needs to be warm. drive your car a good few miles down the motorway and see if you get better economy like i said 5 or 6 miles a time will crucify economy.

It's probably just reaching a normal operating temperature by this time. Are there no alternatives for this journey? Bus, bike? Not only will you get poor MPG, but a car operating under these conditions is under more stress than longer cruises.

Take yourself off to see some distant friends, relatives or for some sight seeing and give the car a good blast to see if the MPG improves, not only that, but with your favourite music on (or talking book), you will get to experience the cosseting the 75 gives you on a hike and getting out still refreshed.

Giving it a longer run will probably help by getting the engine up to temperature and give it the oppotunity to burn off the carbon deposits that will build up on short distance runs.

Consider using some injector cleaner in your fuel as this will also help.

Hope this helps

Mpg

The operative word is 'AUTO'. You get nothing for nothing, if you want the ease of driving an auto you have to pay for it in reduced MPG. My auto CDT does about 24 mpg if used solely for local runs (about four miles max) but it also does 48.5 mpg on a long run. I find that perfectly acceptable for such a magnificent car.

The official urban mpg was quoted as 28.3 for the CDT (and, CDTi, according to one source) Auto Tourer. The mixed cycle was 40.9, which is what I get, so I would believe those figures. How are you measuring this? Between tank re-fills is the best way.

using my 75 as a cab, these figures are fairly accurate, and i do lots of both, my best example for you would be ...

1 full tank 50% motorway, 50% town, late 30s early 40s, however i do disagree with many books that state average mpg is 50+, dont know where they get figure from.
only way you will get 50+mpg is all-constant motorway driving at 55/60 mph

Just a quick update.. took the car out on the open motorway today.. gorgeous day.. favourite CDs, baby content and asleep in the car seat.. Got 44 mpg over the 50 mile trip averaging 78mph.. all was good, then...! Charge light comes on, then all the warning lights come on, loosing power, struggle on down on the hard shoulder, hazard lights intermittent.. only another junction and nearly home.. conked out completely but not until I'm at the top of my road.. Alternator well and truly dead! Hey-ho.. (Also, thanks to the man who towed me home with a now very uncontent baby.. ).
