I had new brake pipes fitted last week to get my F through her MOT and paid £200 for the privilege but last night i was looking under her because i had been hearing a funny noise and i was surprised that the brake pipes looked black and dusty, i had thought they would look nice and new.

So my questions are:

Should they look all nice and new and can i actually see them or is what i think are brake pipes something else?

Copper which is what im finding really odd, it was only last Thursday, also when i looked at the rear wheel in my limited knowledge where i think the brake pipe ends at the wheel there is a big lump of rust at the clip?!?

The pipes do not go all the way to the hubs, about 25 cm short of the hub they connect with a flexi pipe, looks like woven metal (the outside is woven metal actualy) and it may be this part you are seeing. They have to be flexi as the hub moves up and down in relation to the car in general as you drive over the one or two pot holes to be found in the UK roads. If they didn't change the flexies,(they may not have needed to), then yes, you may well see some rust. Look under the car again, trace the flexies from the calipers and you should see the new copper pipes joining onto them. If you dont see the new pipes, go get a big hammer and have a discussion with the workshop :bgrin2:

The bit with the rust is a fixed pipe that goes into a ribbed looking bendy pipe, i am going to get my dungees on this afternoon and get under and have a proper look. The thing is im not 100% sure which pipes are the brake pipes but as far as i see it is anything new and copper has been fitted i should be able to see it shouldnt i?

Where's a handy pit when you need one.

Edit: I dont suppose anyone has an underside diagram so i know what im looking for?

The brake pipes are the things that look like parallel black lines that join all the othet bits up. It is only a schematic diagram though so doesn't show exactly where the pipes run. They should be obvious if they are new and copper.
