How does the paint code, relate to the colour of the paint?

For example, Midnight blue (my car colour) has a paint code of JQW.

How do these three letters relate to the colour?
As i can't see any of the letters in the words, Midnight Blue.

I just curious really.

Cheers

I don't think there's any relation at all mate. Tahiti Blue is JRJ. Maybe they're the initials of the bloke who came up with the colour or the last three letters of his car's numberplate

There is no pattern to them. The codes are used for catalogue purposes and the fact that they only use three letters makes it easy to remeber. The snag is with some there is two or three types of the same colour. Afew examples of this are,

Nightfire Red 1,2,3
Tahiti Blue 1 and Pearl which is 3,
White Dimond and White Dimond 2,
BRG 1,2,3

sounds like my Mitsubishi - which just to confuse matters further uses Chrysler paint codes because the factory that made it was built for Chrysler.

My car has the code "WP" - which is as the bleating obvious suggests - "White Paint" - but which white paint? Chrysler Australia had 4 shades of white, all with the code WP.
