P reg Rover 820Si - Dexron or Hondamatic ATF

I know this has been discussed before and I've done a search, however I've struggled to find a conclusive answer.

I've noticed the ATF fluid is below minimum on the Rover. It is due for a LONG drive over the next week and a half (France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany) including mountain roads, as such, I'd like it in as good as health as possible.

Don't intend to drain and refill, just top up - which shall I use? I know it is stated if the wrong fluid is used - the gearbox will explode causing death, destruction and likely to precipitate WW3. I would not like that responsibility on my shoulders.

(The difficulty is of course, knowing what is in there already).

I contacted ZF (The gearbox manufacturer) for a definitive answer. They say that we should use Dexron 2 or 3. I used 3 for a complete drain and refill.
Going for Dexron II. :)
That's what every piece of Rover literature I've ever seen says for the ZF box. Hondamatic is a must for the 827, though.
