what are your symptoms. Overheating can be caused by lots of things. Checked for usual signs of HGF i presume?
Without looking at it I can say afew things.

I bet the fan dont kick in, this could be down to the coolant temp sensor or the engine ecu.

If the car is low miliage I bet the rad is shot and I bet the head gasket will be going. Never seen a Rover 100 with its factory gasket on to this date yet.

The car should have no issue getting more then 60MPH in 3rd. So your car is obviously very sick and shouldnt be driven till it can be sorted.

Also I bet half the igintion system is old as thats another neglected Rover 100 fave.

As for dropping in a 1.4 16V it can be done but you do need new ECU's etc and they need programing unless you get a matched set and there is afew other things which need to be done too.

See MetroPower for more info on this.

head gasket failure :(
cylinder number 2 took plugs out turned over spurted out water, damp plug, water in oil, loosing **** load of water out the cooling system and loads of white smoke

so looks like a bus to college dunno about work what perts do i need apart from new head gasket?
well i got the car last year on 40000 miles by 1 old lady owner always garaged etc its got 54000 on now nothing in history about haed gasket and it had full service history when i got it so I think maybe it is the original anyway ill find out
Get on to Russel Walsh at MG Rover Solutions for the headgasket. He is based in Tonbridge, Kent.

His work is guaranteed, prices very reasonable, he travels to most places in England and Wales and comes highly regarded by all users on here who have had work done by him.

Typical miliage for the 100. Anything from 20K to 60K they tend to go if everything else is ok on the cooling system. They do tend to be helped along by rotten rads and iffy thermostats.
well changed the thermostat last year and drain plug seal and it randomly used to over heat. got a gasket kit 65 quid rip off any way gonna attempt to fix it now
Good man, the 8V is faily easy to work on and to be honest the head should not require skimming.

If you get stuck Im often down your way in the caravan at Bridlington and dont mind comming up to help.
Seijin, as you are offering help why not help me, by returning the money you accepted for goods You failed to supply?

Just dont ask for my address again as I am sick of typing it and sending it to you without any result.

I didnt take your money. The company I worked for did. I have sent you there details and passed yours onto them. Thats all I can do. I dont work for them anymore as I have already said.

I have tried several times to help you but I am not prepared to get envloved when I am personally attacked by yourself. Follow up the details I gave you and they will sort you out.
overheating and misfiring

Seijin the cheque I made out was a personal one, made out in your name. You then offered to send the goods if I sent you my address again, which I did, I hold you responsible,
You have made promises and then began to involve a third party who I have never heard of. Please return my money or supply the goods.

Kels.
thanks for the advice peeps after a lot of bombing around on my bros ped picking up bits from ere ther n evrywer me n my dad have finally managed to replace head gasket and get it running :)

we found that alot of the hoses were full of gunk and 1 or 2 blocked so cleaned them out this causing overheating which caused hgf. the oil was like caramel milkshake when we took it out :s.

We also didnt bother with head skimming bolloks and even reused the head bolts (didnt wana pay an extra 30 quid) started up left tick over 4 20 mins while bleeding coolant/ topping oil up. when i took for a steady drive it coughed a few times down my street whilst clearin all the **** out and runs great for now so ill c how it goes over the next few weeks and re torque after a 1000 km as instructed
