if the head gasket is being replaced does changing the oil rail to the uprated one add much time to the job? & does anyone know a good/cheap supplier?

Well easy to do,
Just need to take the sump cover off, and the oil rail is secured by two bolts.
Recomended to change the oil rail when doing head gasket.
how long did it take? i'v been told you have to remove th manefold & because of th angle it adds a couple of hours?
The only thing in the way is the exhaust downpipe.
but as you are doing it as part of the head gasket replace,
So you shoud have the exhaust manifold unbolted and you can pull it down a bit to get the sump cover off.
It only adds about 15-20 mins to your job, (it's well easy).
The new rail only recommended if you want to maximise the chances of the repair lasting longer, it's not a service replacement item.

The rail was strengthened which is supposed to provide more rigidity, the engine is a sandwich design so is inherently less stable than a short-bolt design.

To clarify, you don't need to replace the rail every time you do a change.
so surely it makes sense to do it then? Its a £50 part & you dont want the hg going again.
this is the blurb that comes from the place supplying mine:

ROVER SERVICE BULLETIN STATES: THAT THIS PART SHOULD BE FITTED IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE MLS HEAD GASKET
IF FITTED TO PRE-2002 MODELS
IMPROVED DESIGN & MATERIAL - MAINTAINS CORRECT CLAMPING LOAD - UNLIKE EARLY PART

I'v read the MLS is much more prone to leak than the elastomer gasket without the new oil rail.
I have lost count of new head gaskets I have fitted, never fitted a new oil rail and never had a msl head gasket fail.
From an engineering point of view, the replacementoil rail in a Rover/MG car is not essential.

From an OEM supplier marketing point of view, its mandated that some OEM suppliers will not honour any warranty if a MLS gasket and Oil Rail are not changed together at the same time.
