I had my new subs running quite loud today and after a while a nice electrical being pushed smell wafted through the car. 2 options, firstly the amp had some dust in it and it was smelling when heated up. Secondly the voice coils were going into meltdown and I was about to shag my speakers.

any thoughts.

subs have been bedded in for a few weeks and the amp is pushin 450w rms onto subs rated for 300w rms so Im pretty sure which is the weak part of the setup!! Max power wrecked one of these subs but it held out for 2 min at over a thousand watts so hopfully I aint killing them yet.............

amp alpine mrv 1505 running 450w rms @ 2 ohm
subs DEI studio 10" rated somwhere between 300-400w rms

Could just have been glue melting off. This is part of the running in process ;)

If it was your coils... well, as long as the sub still works, you shouldn't need to worry - just be a bit more careful next time. The burnt coils smell will linger for quite a while - think of it as a trophy ;)
