Newbie needs HG Advice!!!!!

Hi all, i have a 98 mgf 1.8i thats done 55k miles. As far as im aware, there are no signs of a HGF, (no oil in water, or visa versa, good running temp etc...) My thoughts are to change the head gasket before anything goes wrong, and now while i have alot of spare time.

Im quite handy with a set of spanners, always done all my own repairs. The biggest job ive ever done was a cambelt and variator change on an Alfa Romeo 145, which consisted of taken the cam shafts out just to get the variator off!

Im sure there are many threads and posts about this, but i would like some one to point me in the right direction of some sort of step by step manual, any specialist tools and definitive parts i will need to change.

I would like to do this as cheaply as possible, as im not keeping the car so not here for the long run, i just want it to be ok for a good 10k miles

Much appreciated

Personally, If your not keeping the car, then if it isn't broke - then dont fix it.

Just keep an eye on the coolant, and if the gasket goes, then fix it then.
Agree with the above. Don't fix it if it aint broke.

Just keep an eye out for the tell tale signs and when it happens get on to Russel Walsh at MG Rover Solutions.
http://www.mgroversolutions.com/

His work is guaranteed, prices very reasonable, he travels to most places in England and Wales and comes highly regarded by all users on here who have had work done by him.

Also, join the AA and have 'parts & labour' cover which covers the headgasket if/ when it goes. :)

P.S. Why aren't you keeping the car?? They are great fun and if your listening to the old MG Rover rumours then take no notice. When you drive the car on some winding A and B roads you'll change your mind! :D
But above all, it's always best to use this forum properly, and the right form is that one should ask an MGF specific question in the right place - eg the MGF/TF section of the forum.

I hope that doesn't sound unfriendly.

Lovely, polite way to welcome a new member. Well done.
i agree with previous comment lol! , my thinking is why assume that it WILL go wrong? It is very possible that it may NEVER go wrong ! too much negativity here tchhhoo! But seriously hope it stays A OK !

Have you had the car since new? If not, it's likely already had HGF and been fixed. There was a spate of them reported on here (including 2 of mine) that went between 25k miles and 35k miles.

He's always like that. Generally makes casual contributers on here feel small. I'm ignoring him from now on. Isn't there a Lotus forum he can focus his negativity on?
Have to agree with the above posts. Your money would be better spent in ensuring that the cooling system is in first class order and perhaps even fitting a level indicator. More gasket failures are caused by cooling problems than anything else.
