My dog ate my car key and the micro chip that was in it!
I was told today that it is impossible to get a new key activated without an original black key even though i have the red key and have had another key cut with a microchip waiting to be activated, and will need a new computer put in the car which will cost £350, but I have found some places that say they can activate the key but it will cost between £120 - £250. does anyone know if there is a way to by-pass the codes or if there is a cheaper way to activate the key?

You could always wait 10-12 hours and, um, 'recover' the key. ;)

Shouldn't really be a problem getting a new key matched to the car as long as you have the red key, definitely doesn't require a new ECU every time. :)

Failing that, Best of British can remove the immobiliser from the ECU for not much cash.

Thanks, Yeah my boyfriend already tried going through what came out the other end!
I keep getting told that the Red key is no good without a black original. Who's the best of British?

Hmm, I would be concerned that it might not "come out the other end". Something the size and shape of a key could easily get stuck and cause internal injuries - a visit to the vet wouldn't be a bad idea.

if you have the owners hand book on page 7 (400 model ) it tells you how to start it if you have the access code which is recorded on the security info card.

I thought that was the point of the Red Key on the 600 models, so if something like this happens, that can be used to program another key?

At a push, a Rover dealer can do the coding. My silver 600 had to be done when my uncle had it, new key fob programmed etc... for £100 last year..

Done It!

Thanks everyone for your help!
Eventually found someone that could do it. Was told that for £195 he would try to recode the key and imobilizer but if that didn't work he would replace the whole system and barrells all the the same price. he managed to recode it all in the end, apparently there is only 4 people in the london area that have the equipment to do these rovers. and i got a spare key which is now going in my safe so that should my dog get hold of my keys again i wont have this trouble! I have been told that these red keys are a complete waste of time, when Rover made them they put too much sercurity on them so you cant code a key without both the Red key and an original black key. So i would advise if anyone hasn't got a spare black key get one cut now before something happens to it and you end up paying out a fortune like me! The guy i used done me a spare for £25 so at that price it's well worth the money, I'll leave you with his number in case anyone needs it!
