Hi, I need some help in identifying the problem with my 1994 Metro’s gearbox.

After driving it for about 30 minutes, first and second become very hard to engage and reverse grates really badly.
However, even after 30 minutes driving the problem goes away when the engine is switched off, where the gears go in smoothly regardless of clutch in or out. But it comes back again when restarted.

I have replaced the clutch cable and this has not helped the situation.

What could the problem be?

TIA,
Alex

I'm sure the problem is getting worse, the other gears felt a bit iffy the other day when I was sat on the driveway.

Is this the clutch going or the gearbox?

Please help!

gearbox by the sounds of it, warmer the oil gets hence thineer and easier to engage. pick a gearbox up from a rover 114 or similar as have bolted crownwheel rather than weaker bonded one, when i had metro gtis , i got through 4 gearboxes until i fitted rover 114 gta one and had no problems, u can pick them up for pennies from breakers yards or ebay?

Sounds like a clutch problem to me. Difficulty engaging gear usually means the clutch is not fully disengaging. especially as you are able to select gears easily with the engine off.
Where does the clutch bite, at the top or bottom of pedal travel?

Get someone to check the clutch operating arm while you press the pedal. It should start moving as soon as the pedal starts moving. If it doesn't, and there is slack, the cable self-adjustment mechanism is not adjusting (removing slack out of the cable). If it does, then there is a fault in the clutch itself.

So this isn't going to be a problem with the gearbox, but the clutch iteslf?
What kind of problem am I looking at?

Thanks,
Alex

For some reason the clutch is not disengaging. This can be caused by a number of things but it looks like you've ruled out the cable. Clutch out job by the looks of it. Are you going to do it yourself? If not then take it into a garage for a proper diagnosis.

I'm planning on tackling the job myself, what is the problem most likely to be?

Thanks a lot,
Alex

Could be worn or damaged spring fingers, thrust bearing, sticking friction plate...........
Is it making any noise when the pedal is depressed?
Was it working ok and then suddenly problematic, or has it steadily gotten worse?

Thanks for the response guys :)

The clutch bites right at the bottom of the pedal travel.

From what you write, gearbox appears OK. Wise to check gearbox lubricant level and top up if necessary..

So ...Possible clutch drag ... a dragging clutch will always make gear selection notchy or even difficult- particularly reverse which does not have synchromesh...

Cable may need attention. Check and adjust or even replaced - if hydraulic clutch:- seals and/or cylinders need attention?
