Mk3 200...Low Fuel Light..add-on circuit.

I was bored in work on Friday so I turned my attention to the fact that my car has no Low Fuel warning lamp.

The 400 has this feature but the dash light is activated by a thermistor in the tank. I didn't want to have to dismantle the sender unit so I focused on the voltage sent to the gauge.

The circuit I built is a voltage comparator, it lights an LED when the voltage from the sender equates to approximately 5 litres of fuel left.

The circuit is simple enough and uses 10 components, I can provide the diagram if anyone wants to build it.

If there is enough interest I might do a small run of finished units.

Well done you!!!!

Although I try to have at least a third in there, I had the unfortunate journey of a round trip from Stoke to Birmingham and back on Friday which took me 7 hours!! instead of 2, due to a serious accident and my fuel was so low I had no money, forgot my bank cards.. Mobile had a flat battery and frankly I was crapping it!

Something like this would of been a god send if nothing more than to keep my marbles as I was staring into the rear of a lorry for 4 hours!!!

Well done mate I was just thinking the other day if this could be done. I found out that the resistance at the guage changes to show the fuel amount. I see there are 5 wires. is that 2 for power 1 to the guage and 2 for the led?

Please could I also have a copy of the diagram

Here is the circuit diagram for the Low Fuel light.
There should be no problems obtaining any of the components used, it's built on a small piece of 0.1 matrix board.

I can supply the finished circuit including a tutorial for ÂŁ16 including postage and the installation guide if anyone doesn't fancy soldering it up themselves.


*** Error in diagram*** Pin 4 of the IC should also be connected to ground.

The components used are as follows...

Semiconductors;
LM311N comparator.
78L10 voltage regulator.
4.3v 500mW zener diode.
Red LED to suit.
Resistors;
22k 0.25w
4.7k 0.25w
1.8k 0.25w
Capacitors;
1000uF 10v
100uF 16v
47nF 63v


Various lengths of wire, piece of stripboard 11 holes by 11 tracks, solder and soldering iron, heatshrink sleeving and double sided sticky pads.

Thanks for the list Technozen, unfortunately i think i may be over my head. I can see what part is what on the wiring diagram, but i just can't seem to work out exactly how it is wired up. I think i will have to have a ready made unit and follow your instruction guide.

Please let me know any details.

Should work, I assume the tank sender and gauge are the same.

I just chose 5 litres, any less and I was afraid that crud could be sucked into the pump and fuel system.

The circuit can be adapted for higher volumes, 10 litres equates to 3.9 volts, simply change the zener diode to a 3.9v component.

Received the ready made unit from Technozen today, thanks by the way :). Very good instructions and made very well. Very easy mod todo as there is no wire cutting/splicing. The only worrying bit to do is to drill through the guage itself to fit the led.

One problem i did find though which i have sorted, was that when you put the headlights on the dash lights show through the led as there is a see through bit at the back of the led which you don't see which allows the light through. To stop this i surrounded the end of the led in insulating tape and made it a tight fit up against the back of the guage, thus stopping the light to shine through the led.

One question though as i was putting it all back together, i realised that the needle had moved slightly as it wasn't on what is was before taking apart. Will the guage return back to normal when running? Can't start the car at the mo, but this is a long story.
