My other car - a P reg Honda Civic - has just had an MOT and passed. But the garage said that it may need a new cam belt. They said hondas need a new belt every 60,000 and now its on 80,000. They looked at the belt and says it looks fine, a little worn but ok. Theres no record of a new belt in the service history.

I will get a new one, its just a question of when. Is there any 'outward' sign that the belt is worn or is your engine blowing up the firts thing you know about it?

Yep, just change it's a lot cheaper than a new head / engine!!

A week before Xmas my daughter's Escort cam belt tensioner let go when the plastic pulley became 3 plastic quadrants (or is that only for 4?). Only 2 valves survived, 2 valve guides were cracked open but luckily the head and pistons were marked but undamaged. A head skim, valve guides, valves, recut seats, cambelt, tensioner and labour came to £1003.

Get the belt changed when it is due - or in this case ASAP.
