hi, i have just picked my mgzr 1800 stepspeed up from mechanic after putting it in with hgf, the mechanic had car for 2 weeks and told me he had to replace cylinder head [ free of charge] because he did not tighten some nut up or something like that, anyway, on the way home after picking car up from him tonight i noticed that it was much much slower and top end was approx 85 mph ,it really feels like a 1200 or something , is there a major problem here, cos i feel that he has put the wrong head on, i looked at it and it says 16v twin cam. but engine looks a little cleaner. i paid him 350.00 and dont know what to say if i go back tomorrow, i have a young baby and a job where i need my car. this garage /mechanic is sort of old school mentality and is established, what do you think can be causing this,

please dont get me wrong i dont break the law ,never had a speeding ticket ,lucky me. no seriously, i dont know much about cars but i know that my car was much more responsive than this before i gave him it.

There's only really two ways you can have the wrong cylinder head, and that's by him mistakenly fitting either a VVC head or an 8v head. Neither of which are a straight bolt on so highly unlikely....

More likely that either the timing isn't quite right (how does the car run in general?) or that the throttle cable or something daft hasn't been refitted quite right.

thanks but should he not fix it free because i gave him the car to do head gasket and he told me he started it up after forgetting to tighten cam bolt or something like that. he then said he had to replace cylinder head because he ruined the head all together, i now have an mgzr that is not reponsive at all , i am paying 138.00 every 6 months for tax for a hot hatch. not to mention the insurance , isnt it illegal if he refuses to right the problem he has caused. i have used this mechanic for years, what do i do now.

it says 16v twin cam on engine , could he have put a whole new engine in and not cracked on, surely not ,and if he has where do i stand. car does not miss or anything like that it just feels like a 1400 or similar. im gutted now cos after waiting two weeks for car back ,i will have to go and give him it again tomorrow if he accepts it..

any 16v 200/25/ZR will go faster than 85MPH. in fact i imagine even the 1.1 8v would go faster than that.

perhaps the spark plugs aren't all firing? there are lots of things that might have been put back together incorrectly, having the wrong engine is probably the least likely possibility.

anyway, stress that you need the car when you take it back! all mechanics (like everyone else) make mistakes from time to time, it's how they deal with them that matters. if he wants you to pay him to correct his mistakes take your car elsewhere, there are plenty of others that would like the work.

sounds like timing might be out or something.

"ive heard" even the 1.4 has no trouble hitting 100 and beyond
My first ever car, a base model Fiesta 1 litre could even make 100mph (on a downhill slope...), so a 1.4 should easily do that all day long.

Sounds as though the 'mechanic' has borked your engine - or at the very least, not done a proper job in fixing it.

yea, you all have given me hope that he has not changed the engine and maybe he just changed the dip stick cos it does seem to be a different one. but i cant imagine an established mechanic trying to do something like that. i would be disappointed.
even my little coolant bleed screw seems to be different but it could be my imagination my missus says.ha , i have my engine number here and am eager to check it tomorrow first light. if i can find the engine number that is haha

My 214 16v will do 70 in second... Sure it could do more than 85...

I had a knobby lorry on the m40 today when I was pulling onto it after being at the services... Slowed down when I tried to fit in behind and sped up when I tried to get in front...

Was only a short slip road... Was up to 70 in no time... Just glad it was warm and has guts!

The engines in the F/TF have a different dipstick arrangement.

Timing would be the first place to look, followed by a blockage in either the exhaust or induction systems.

when i got mine back tonight i took it on the express way and was worrying that it seemed to be getting up to speed very slowly yet it was stable [no missing] i knew i needed to test it, it only reached 85 and i had to put it into sport mode for that, so something is wrong somewhere. wont sleep tonight now haha

could a 1400 head be fitted onto an 1800 block [mgzr] cos this mechanic said he has had to put a recon head on but did not charge me for it because he said it was his fault, fair play to him for owning up to that one ,but could he have put a 1400 head on, would one fit, it does say 16v twin cam on the cover. it also has a dizzy cap

could the timing be out and the car not sound like its missing when being driven cos this did not sound like it was missing when i drove it. it just did not have any poke. could the timing be out and it feel ok

Didn't notice the dizzy cap.

As mentioned the ZR uses the newer wasted spark variant of the engine, not the older dizzy cap version.

Major bodge if he has retro fitted a dizzy head to your car. That needs changing to the correct type.
