hello, im having a problem with my mgtf, the vvc unit is leaking oil. i would like to know how to remove it from the car to replace the gaskets. it seems to me that the bulkhead is in the way and prevents removal. do you need to drop the engine and if you do whats involved?

this may help - http://www.timguydesign.f2s.com/pics/MG-HG-Replacement.pdf its for an F Trophy, so the VVC unit should be covered.
The VVC unit doesn't come off when you change the HG unless Tim stripped the head and removed it :dunno:

The head has to be removed and stripped to be able to take the HCU out.
VVC mechanism does and can come off without stripping the head.

BUT... it is highly unrecomended to separate from the cams, which is why Rover dealers werent permitted to, and why its not recomended to separate yourself eigther.

So only way is.. and head doesnt have to come off! lol,, dont want to be disturbing that head gasket un-necessarily.

is to unbolt the top half of the head... as it is a split head.. bottom half is the head, top half is just a ladder frame type cam carrier which unbolts separately without effecting the lower part of the head itself.

Ive had 1 of these VVC units partially apart, nothing really complicated about them, biggest reason why they arent to be pulled apart is, nothing inside is secured together per'se its just blocks of metal secured on pins which move back and forth... so they fall apart easily, and the problem is if you dont know where each of the metal blocks came from originally.. you cant put it back together correctly and get it wrong and the VVC can have lots of free play inside, or sieze up as each metal block wears to its runner and pin.

which was why i had to partially pull one apart.. previous repairer had let it fall apart.. and the VVC had a stiff spot when rotated near to the point of siezing up... took me absolutely ages to re-arrange the blocks inside till it ran smoothly, and i had found the original places... if it wasnt siezing up on the pin it was siezing up in the runner.

exactly why it can be disasterous if these units come apart and arent put together again properly... so avoid at all costs lol

vvc unit leaking

thanks for the replys. ok i went to Brown and Gammons and got a set of gaskets. thankfully it was'nt as hard as i first thought to get the vvc unit off the engine.
once the engine cover was removed i supported the body on axle stands. then i placed a trolly jack under the engine. once the wire plugs had been removed i undid the 2 bolts on the engine mount then lowered the jack a bit which allowed me room to remove the vvc unit.
once i'd removed it i split it apart. this showed a couple of score marks on the inner face which allows the oil to escape past the gaskets. these were then sanded flat. new gaskets installed i reversed the proceedure and put it all back together. with luck that should solve the problem. fingers are now crossed.

Well done! Sounds like quite a job. Did you have to take the VVC belt off (belt on the other end to the timing belt)?
