MGTF replacement Exhaust Backbox for a Trophy - help!

I've got a 2003 TF and the backbox is rusting through. MOT due so tried to get a replacement. Apparently mine's a Trophy so it has a butterfly valve on the right hand pipe which only lets it open when revs are high to improve performance. A replacement is over £500. Or can get one without the valve for around £160. That's a lot of money for a valve but I'm not sure if i really need it or what the impact would be if i go for the cheaper replacement. Anybody got any tips please?

:welcome:

Your backbox isn't a "Trophy" as they didn't have the valve - you don't need the valve (most have been disconnected anyway by now) just make sure that he tube that normally goes to the valve is blocked off.

The valve is only there to reduce the noise coming from the exhaust, it opens the valve at 4000 rpm.

Welcome to the.org forum ptoddy. Loads of good condition 2nd hand exhausts for TF's on ebay starting from around £30.00, or you could pick up a Statinless Steel either new or secondhand.

From posts I have seen on here, a good few of the members on this forum have 'spare' exhausts in their garages which they may want to sell. May be worth asking the question!

Thanks for all the replies. I'm still trying to understand this. If the butterfly valve only opens at 4000 rpm then mine has hardly ever done that as i usually only accelerate to 3000 and at 75 mph its only 3500. So i guess i'm just running woth the left hand pipe exhausting. So if i fit a replacement pipe without the valve wont it mean 2 pipes are both open, even if i blank the vacuum pipe off properly. And what is the impact on the engine, performance and fuel economy.
I'm not going to replace the exhaust just yet, but I'm in Cumbria (Ian M)
Will try to add a picture shortly.

Hi

Most of the people on here have replaced the standard and totally quiet original exhaust for something with a bit more sound.
Of which there are many all with different prices, finishers and sound.
Prices vary from £200 for a very basic system up to ...well some are very costly over £400.

Most are simply less deadened chambered style systems, very similar in original design to the OEM systems.
A couple are more radical.
Longlife will make you one up from scratch for your car and have a policy of straight through design, and of course the now out of production TT Mk4 was a straight-through design unlike any other manufacturer's.

Things to remember:-

The valve thing is virtually useless and can easily be disconnected. Just pull off the little black hose and stuff a screw into the end of the hose.

Standard exhausts can cost as much as stainless steel aftermarket ones, so take the chance to shop around you have the time but you will have to get something new as rusted exhausts are only fit for the scrapyard.

The car is utterly transformed by fitting a more vocal system. Totally and utterly transformed.

Your car will need an MGTF exhaust as pre 2000 MGF ones won't fit.

The three bolts holding the rear box on will have turned into 3 little pyramids of corrosion and won't be coming off any time soon, so will have to be attacked with an angle grinder.

Best of luck
