How does the engine stop? When does it do it, when cold? When hot?

 

when warm and as if it is out of petrol, no fault lights
its done 78k 'my friendly mechanic wants to burn it lol'

 

how many miles it done?
it is recommended to change the fuel filter after 60,000. (not necessary, but i'm trying to rule things out)
are you able to drop the cat and check it's condition? i think someone on here had similar problem, was a collapsed cat blocking the exhaust. (helps to know a friendly mechanic)

 

did not consider the cat
but when it runs its perfect
just a little off topic do they recommend to chang head gasket before they go that the replacement ones are better

Call me daft but in the motor trade we like to find what the problem is before fitting expensive parts mg:


Can you hear the pump running? Is there definitely fuel in the tank (could be faulty fuel gauge)?

Try bridging the relay and see if it runs (if it is a four-pin relay, pins 30 and 87) If not, check for power to the relay (12V and pin 30). If it does, check that the relay is being switched on by the ECU (you should have a PD of 12V across pins 85 and 86).

There's an inertia cut off switch which could be causing the problem. There's a reset button by the brake servo.

Hi, i have a similar problem with my mg but mine cuts out within the first 15 seconds when the engine is cold. What is the inertia cut off switch?

 

got the parts of a good car swaped them temp. still stopped
definitly has petrol this is a problem over a few weeks
car will drive then stop on the side of the road
intermitent problem drove 15 miles yesterday then stopped then 4 times
the next 15

 

does your "friendly mechanic" have a tester to read the ECU fault codes??? might be some clues in there.

 

no. but no engine fault light coming on

Have you got dirt floating around in the petrol tank causing the pickup pipe to block, I had this on an old SD1 rover, gave the feeling of no petrol getting through, the only problem is that on the r25 you have to drop the tank to check, alternatively carry a few spanners and when it happens, disconnect the fuel pipe on the inlet side on the filter and turn on the ignition and see if the fuel comes out.

 

tried cleaning out the tank this did not work either

 

not sure if there is a reccomended milage to do head gasket, think it's all about bravery and catching it early. some can go regularly, some never go. depends on many many factors.

 

mine is still not fixed now i am being told its the ecu

 

Change the fuel carbon filter first alot cheaper and it causes that issue you discribe

my cars the same

garage just throwing parts at it, no could be o2 sensor post cat or fuel pump, don't fuel pumps work or not ,no in between.

did this get solved?

 

Ever thought the injectors could be getting blocked ??Id change injectors and filter then go from there

 

I would say to inspect the earths, but this thread is 6 years old lol

 

throttle position sensor can be another issue, best to go to someone that knows the k-series, so many problems have the same symptoms, need to look beyond the obvious.
