MG Monthly UK Registrations

182356 Views 1254 Replies 39 Participants Last post by  simcor
This thread is to discuss, and make guesses about, MG monthly registrations in the UK which are generally on the up - but how much?

I'm not the only fan of MGs who's not here as often as they used to be and I don't think we have the quorum any more to run a separate thread for each month, but if we have a thread with no month in the title, then anyone can start the ball rolling for subsequent months and update the summary of who has guessed what in their own post.

They seem to be on a bit of a roll, but the Brexit business as some influence.
So 1535 is my choice.
Thanks to media's need to fill their rolling 24/7/365 news channels they have hyped up the effects of Brexit always looking for the negative. Most folks will not be effected much by the 23-06-2016 vote now. They may have been affected negatively as a direct or indirect bi-product of the UK's forty odd year membership of the so called Union of Europe. I for one was so negatively affected ..

The BBC is ever keen to accentuate the negative of that 2016 vote, rarely emphasising the positives... with Murdoch's former SKY broadcasting organ a close running second where BREXIT negativity is concerned. They have sustained some level of the negativity for closing on three years now. The Nation has tired of there incessant negativity and are getting on with things as usual.

Always look on the DARK side of life...That's our UK meejah for you..... There's a theme tune there somewhere.

I have reduced my guess total based simply on registration letters and dates. It used to be that more cars were registered on 1st August than at any other time. Creates a false impression. Despite that, I will not be surprised if Chinese MGs do make a good showing this month. Have spoken to three owners of the new MG ZS now. It appears favourable word of mouth reports about these good value SUV/CROSSOVERS are generating increasing sales. Must be something like that. I have not seen any TV or News paper/magazine media advertisements for a long time now.

950 hearing sales are slowing down and new 3's are not selling that much.

I suspect you're right, Simcor. We've had our new model MG3 for best part of 6 months, and I still haven't seen another on the road. Curious in a way, as it's better than the old model in general, and certainly looks much better inside and outside. So why aren't they selling??
My guess for April is the same as last month, 1234. I have just had a couple of trips to just north of Nottingham visiting relatives and saw just the one MG, a GS somewhere on the A1. Returning home I immediately see several MG's. Perhaps people are just using them as "local runabouts". It seems that I will be doing monthly trips to Nottingham in the near future and will have no hesitation in doing the 130+mile trip knowing that the car will be quiet and comfortable and more economical than I expected.

All the best...Chris.

Had they released the new 3 with the 1.0t with a manual box I imagine it would be selling better.

Facelifting a car that has had so much negative press for its engine with the exact same engine was never going to set sales on fire for the face-lift model.

I don't think I've seen a face lift 3 yet on the road myself.
I visited new dealer Unity near Coventry on Monday, and there were children running about saying "I love MG!" and pensioners talking turkey at the sales desk. They have what for an MG dealer is quite a large showroom with 5 MGs inside plus about the same number from their other brands SsangYong and Subaru. Although they have only been in the network for about a month, salesman Jack said they had been canvassing their customer base, many ex-Fiat customers, to good effect. Clearly there are some dealers who are getting those sales (no names!) and some dealers who aren't. When ZS EV is launched it's a chance to interest everyone in future MG...
Based on no insider knowledge and never having been correct I'll say 1400. :greeny:
Hope I’m not too late (not logged in for a while). I’ll go for 1234 for absolutely no reason whatsoever. ?
Adam, I don't think that its too late but there are now two of us that have guessed 1234! Perhaps that means that we will both be right!

All the best...Chris.

Not too late, Adam, figures released tomorrow, but you have performed the unlikely feat of duplicating one of about half a dozen guesses, so I've given you 1235.
Simcor was closest, the number was "only" 980.

Crikey fair dip from last month but still 980 is still a long way from the dizzy heights of 12 or so cars a month being a regular occurrance.

That's true. I think 11 was the worst month maybe ten years ago.

Then again, nearly 1,000 sold in a "quiet" month! ;)

It seems that it is ZS powering the sales and so I wonder yet again whether it might not be the time for advertising on the back of ZS EV which will surely be presented to the world next week.
May 2019.

May 2018 811.

April 2019 980.

There's a huge surge of interest in MG due to the presentation of ZS EV to the UK, including comments like "I didn't realise they still made them!"

I think the meteoric growth which ZS brought to sales in 2018 is now at an end but that if MG have any say in the matter they'll be going for 1,000 registrations this month having been so close in a quiet month, hence a four-figure guess.

PS that's 500 posts on this thread in just over 1½ years - I think that counts as post fury in 2019!
