Due to opening and closing of the boot lid, wiring loom attached to boot lid is folding every time. This folding can eventualy lead to breaking of wires within this loom. This breakage can lead to various type of problems from non-operating third brake light to alarm sounding during night.

It is wise to make inspection of this loom in order to see if you have broken wires and you need to repair them.

When repairing them, it is wise to make them tad longer then before, as this will allow more easily folding space thus making breaking less likely to occure next time.

Following is list of wires that are passing to boot lid, for you to be able to identify them.

MG F/TF Boot Hinge Wire Colours & Functions:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mk1 MG F has 8 wires in this loom

Black ------------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lid Switch - earth wire
Purple/Red -------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lid Switch (when switch is closed this wire is earthed)

Black ------------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lock Switch - earth wire
Black/Red --------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lock Switch (when switch is closed this wire is earthed)

Black ------------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Third Brake Lamp - earth wire
Green/Purple ------------------ 0,5 sqared mm - Third Brake Lamp (when brake switch is closed this wire is live)

Purple ------------------------ 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lamp - live wire
Purple/Red -------------------- 0,5 sqared mm - Boot Lamp (when Boot Lid Switch is closed this wire is earthed)

NOTE: Purple/Red wires of Boot Lid Switch and Boot Lamp are joined in the loom within engine compartment when they pass from boot lid.

Mk2 MG F and MG TF have 7 wires in this loom

NOTE: Boot Lid Switch earth and Boot Lamp earth wires are joined in the Boot Lid

My wiring broke but before that the alarm would go off if you opened the boot without switching off the alarm first.
I was met with 3 black wires to 3 black wires broken and no matter what way I put them together the alarm does not go off any more with the boot door. I wired them so I had the boot light working and the strip stop light working any other combination made me loose the boot light or stop light. Its MGF Mark 2 year 2000. Can anyone explain what might be wrong.

This is odd ... if your lamp in the boot is working, then alarm should be working as well. I can think of only two situations - either you have some other broken wire, or alarm is not set properly.

This was a How To I did several years ago to cure this:

So I went to do this today.
  • One (third brake live) is connected ... to a black wire that runs under the carpet. Presuming to the live of another brake light?
  • Three (black red, purple red and one black) are broken but repairable
  • The rest are broken right back at the main loom - I can't get to them to get enough clearance to extend them.

Is there any way to get extra play on the main loom? Or is there a more accessible place I can get to the wires earlier on and run new ones back?

Hi again, I just wondered if you can help with this one: glove box light not working, I repaired the broken loom in the boot and now most everything works including interior lights apart from the glove box. So thanks again for your previous post on this wiring. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards.

Problem with glow box is usualy because of the switch. You would need to check with multimeter ih you have 12V when you switch your lights on, on the power wire to the glow box light. If you do then switxh needs to be inspected (switch creates contact to ground). If you do not, then you maybe have break in the power wire. Most usual place is behined the radio, since sharp edges of metal cage rubbing on wire can brake it.
