In the MGF, it is a black box behind the ECU bracket to which the ECU is attached. IT actually has 4 relays for 4 components. I recently replaced mine to solve a voltage seepage.

Search on part number YWB100970 to find the image.

On your question 'Is there a fuse which is in line with the lead to the starter solenoid ', there is a fusible link that is in the wire running from the alternator to the starter motor (part of the cable close to the starter motor). I replaced my fusible link with an inline 80 amp fuse as per the TF.

Starter relay - 5th pin out of the 8th terminal (MFRU output) and 4th and 6th pins of the 6 pin terminal (MFRU input) are unique to the starter solenoid relay. It shares 7th pin out the 8 pin terminal with the Lambda sensor relay.

Pin numbers from the cable entry side start at pin1 (top left) in the row closest to the terminals' 'catches'.

Do yourself a favour and use a voltmeter to identify the right pins/relay.

YWB 100970 is the one. Note that the blue connector can come loose and so can the 6 pin connector to YWB 100970 as the wires leading to it are too short from the loom so forcing the connector to disconnect from YWB 100979 (I manufactured a link wire to ease the pressure).

I know this as I had to replace YWB 100970 recently. All the connectors behind the ECU are important as they connect to the starter, the fuel pump, lambda, the ambient ¨temp sensor (and therefore the engine fan) and the list goes on! Check the blue one is fully engaged (in fact check all of them, particularly those with thick brown wires).

See https://andrewrevill.co.uk/EU3MultiFunction.htm for a clearer explanation of the relay connections.
