I think by this point the Golf GTi had got to it's fat and flabby versions. I had one of these for nearly a decade and did a lot of miles in it. I too loved that car, so much so that I eventually swapped an ex-Rover 800 M16 engine into it and recammed it to around 155bhp. Fairly swift for the times and, being a Maestro, it had zero attention from the police, unlike the XR3i for example. I miss it to this day in a way but I moved on to estate cars and until the ZTT 260 came along there was no real option in the Rover stable. Ended up with an imported Subaru Legacy twin turbo which I still have.
