Like it! Nice car too - is that another turbo of yours behind it too?
Yes it is ~ towing car attached by A-Frame which I have to use now that some plonker stole my twin axle trailer. ( a pox on him and his issue for three generations! ), Here is the pair from another angle when I took a break on the foul weather journey when I collected it from deep in the Welsh valleys on Tuesday afternoon.

This is how the A-frame works ~ the towed car steers itself ~ but you must have the key in it with the steering unlocked, car in neutral and handbrake off. Very useful.

Here's another 620ti being towed by my silver Monty with my much missed twin axle trailer. I'm always checking other trailers ~ I hope tp spot my stolen one one day ...:

Crikey how did someone manage to steel your trailer? Thats a damn shame - not cheap either? ~ scum these days. That A frame looks good - how much does one set you back may I ask? I think it would be a good thing to have as I havnt the space for a big trailer here.

By the way when you say you picked up that 620 turbo tuesday afternoon - is this a recent tuesday? a new car?

Nice monty turbo there - still going of course?

Yes, Tuesday 16th ~ two days ago when the Heavens opened up in the Gloucester Welsh Borders area.

This is what it looked like before the rains came on Tuesday:

I got the A-Frame off ebay from the specialist who makes them and supplies the well known car recovery agencies according to the description. They usually go for about 200 to 220 quid, rarely less. Soon pays for itself. If you get one, DO take things easy until you are familiar with what it can and CAN'T do. Trailers and articulated vehicle towing is a skill which only comes with progressive experience. Like all articulated vehicle set-ups, it is possible to 'Jack Knife' whilst towing with an A-Frame. Take it easy until you're familiar with the way these things work.

Yes, the Monty Turbo is still going strong but is on SORN at the moment. I started it up today and ran it for a little while, just to keep its juices from stagnating.

Looks to be in tidy condition. Whats she like mechanicly?

Advice taken on the A frame - I wont be using it just at the moment if I get one as I havnt yet passed my test, but my dad would use it for me. Project cars etc.

Its a shame when there on SORN isnt it - theres my dads 1998 Rover 416 sitting on the drive on SORN at the moment and I hate to see it just sat there. On the other hand I dont want to see it sold.

Power Washed engine and engine compartment today. Also blasted front and rear arches and quite a bit of crud was washed down to reveal corrosion free rear arches ~ that's a relief! Can now see what's what in the engine compartment.

It is a tidy example. Now I'm getting to know the car it's better than expected. 93,000 miles with MoTs and Invoices to support that mileage. Very good mechanically ~ has stood unused since August so noisy cam followers but as oil was low I topped up with Diesel 15-40 semi synthetic and guess what, nice smooth running engine and near silent camshafts once engine had fully warmed ~ and quiet since. Thermostat stuck open I suspect ~ Invoice for new one four years ago...I have a good spare.

Two disappointments with it both allowed for when I bid. One, the AirCon doesn't work ~ the other, possible wheel bearing N/S/F. Oh yes, the driver's window operates but soon comes out of it's channel guides. That should be an easy fix as will the 'possible' wheel bearing for me. Not yet certain about the latter... could be outer CV-joint not bearing. AirCon terra incognita for me ... old dog new tricks sort of thing....

The AirCon will be a challenge. The electrical connector affixed to the back of the Alternator for the AirCon/Compressor was disconnected so I connected it hoping the compressor/pump would work ~ it did not. I'll go over it with a multimeter when time allows.

Only had car a couple of clear days ... Semi-retired so spent today tidying up the nearside rear brake disc and caliper. Both pads were horribly and irregularly worn and there was some metal to metal contact both pads - caught this before it became a bigger problem. The auto adjuster had worked fully out and the inner pad had worn diagonally as it was twisted in the caliper. Thus there was 3mm of pad at the bottom, and metal to metal contact at the other end of the pad. Tapered irregular wear. I cleaned and overhauled the caliper and by chance had a part used good pair of pads with 6mm unworn so fitted them and after cleaning up and regreasing the whole assembly and winding back the piston. Cost nil ~ plus a couple of leisurely hours work in the afternoon sunshine. Caught the sun ~ my face is still glowing ~ fabulous day ~ not a cloud in the sky ~ frost tonight likely though.

Rear Brakes: Good old ebay will provide a pair of rear discs and pads for a about 34 quid delivered. Ordered then yesterday "Buy It Now" from the same source as those I fitted to T16 TBO that I'm happy with. So a known quantity now from that source. Brakes good now but, will be better with a change of fluid and those new rear discs/pads.

Here's some pictures of this near horror story ~ now rectified:

Note tapered pad thickness!

Superb day here ~ a Robin singing and a fine Red Admiral butterfly in my garden most of the day. Well pleased with today's progress ..... another project progesses nicely.... I really like these 620ti ~ this is my nineth... I'm a glutton.

If they put that poxy vehicle tax on the fuel those with more than one vehicle who can only use one at a time would benefiit. Still, all that SORN mullarkey keeps some folks in regular employment and is a nice little earner. I have relied on those folks at Swansea to send reminder for my various cars on SORN. ( I currently have three cars taxed ~ can only drive one) Swansea have faile dto do so on TWO Occasions ~ each costing me 40 quid for cars that have NOT seen any road use for over four years!!

It's a parasitic tax as those who really abuse the system and drive without Tax, Insurance or MoT, do so with the thought that there is little chance of getting 'pulled' or having to pay up.... unlike those honest folks who have to pay up ~ guilty or not when that SORN reminder fails to arrive!!!

Witness all those 'Perps' on those TV "Road Chases" type programmes. Far too many dump the car and outrun the Police.... rarely brought to account ... this imbalance of fairness annoys me. Even those who do occasionally get caught have such a light punishment, it's no deterent ~ they nick a car on the way from the Courts to save the bus fare!! ....'appens .. it really does..

Phew! /////Does you good to have a rant occasionally....:)

Worth bearing in mind, when using an A Frame the vehicle being towed must be taxed and tested, irrespective of whether its a runner or not. Also because its unbraked, the vehicle being pulled must not weigh over 750kg.

It's a shame but the DVLA didn't release some plates which could be considered rude or offensive
Personally I'd love to get P 155 OFF , but as you can imagine it was never released

A few did escape the net, so to speak. SOD 1T was on a car that my dad took in PX back in the early 1980s. And FUK 1T used to be on a black Mk 1. Golf GTI that I saw around a few times in the early 1990s.

That's made me think: what about lights? The brake lights on the towed vehicle won't work, so does it need a trailer board (lights and number plate), or is 'On Tow' sign enough?

And 750kg rules out most cars...
