Most Lotus' used K engines. They have started to use Toyota ones i think, stand corrected though.
I've got a K in mine ;)

All S1's and S2's except the 111R have K. The 111R, S2 Exige and Federal Elise (US market) all use the Toyota engine.

However, there are engine conversions companies around now where you can junk the K and stick in Audi, Ford or Honda engines.

You're a nutter. Sorry about that, but it's true. Certifiable.

As for the Elise K engine, I believe it is 99% compatible with the Rovers/MGs, with the exception of the exhaust manifold. I've only ever inspected one - I think it was a 111s, with the 1.8 VVC. It was rather rapid, to say the least.

Since the engine in an Elise is at the back, I would not recommend taking the engine out of one that was REAR END written off, no.

But you COULD take the engine out of one that had been in a frontal smash. And after you'd wiped off the claret from the interior, there might even be some interesting parts to salvage there, too!
