locking wheel nuts - disaster!

I broke the key!!!!!!

The two little prongs on the inside sheared off when i tried undoing my wheel nut! and apparently according to the guy in the rover garage it happens all the time!

Anyway my point is that i easily managed to get the nuts off without a key so if anyone has some nice expensive wheels and standard rover lock nuts i'd advise changing them!

Just thought i'd pass on my experience - if it saves someone from those lovely people out there who think they can help themseslves to other peoples stuff!

Yup, yet another one of those things on MG-Rovers "happens all the time" list.

I have replaced the bolts, the covers, the key, the key remover, all withiunn 3 years and now I am going to get Mcgard nuts after Christmas. Nothing worse than being stuck at the side of a snowy motorway in the dark needing to change a tyre and you cantget the nuts off!! Half of my nut covers are off anyway as its the only way I can get the nuts off! Doesnt look too good.

I also have two wheel braces under the bonnet, the MGR one and another telescopic type one, as I do not have nuts which can be opened by ONE brace only!! :guns: :guns3:

I was replacing my rear pads at the weekend when mine went. Fortunatly Jeff Fowkes Wheels 2 minutes away from where I live got them all off for me and replaced them with McGard ones (Ford Ghia :yikes: FYI)

Bit of a rash of this happening. I wrecked mine last week trying to get the wheels off to give them a good clean. Got a loan of a key from the dealers that has a different number, but still fits snugly. I might see what options for replacements we have here.

The dealer said that you can get the lugs built up again, and much better, by someone who is good with a welding torch.

i replaced the prong(s) in mine to get the rest of the nuts off [welded a lump in!!], i only put one prong in so it will now undo any rover alloy locking nut [untill my prong breaks off!].

trouble was when it broke in the first place it also desroyed the first wheel nut i tried to remove! nothing hammering a socket on it didnt solve though! i have a set of TSW on it right now - theyre not great but far better than the originals.
