I'm just about to swap the engine and gearbox out of my 1994 214 cabrio, was expecting an easy straight swap without having to seperate the engine from the gearbox, but I have been told that I may need to keep the flywheel from the original engine as is is specific to the cars ECU.

Is this true?

The flywheel is particular to the version of the engine management used, you car should be using MEMS 1.6 and the ecu should look like the one in the attached image.

The later MEMS 1.9 has a X shape pressed into the aluminium cover of the ecu. If the "new" engine uses this version then you will have to swap the flywheels.
