Is there a connection between engine bay temperature and coolant loss?

I know this sounds a daft question, but...

As noted elsewhere, I have developed a slow coolant leak, about 1cm in 4 weeks, give or take.

I'm also now experiencing my engine bay fan coming on frequently when I park up after driving home in the evenings. Tonight, for example, it kicked in after a 12 mile drive (at speeds around 50 or so, not thrashing it). The ambient temp was quite cold, enough for ice to be forming on the windows before I left work.

It just seems odd that the fan is coming on these temps....could it be connected to the coolant problem? I've not looked yet for where its getting out...

cheers

HI GUys, thanks for your notes. I haven't noticed an increase in idle, but will check. Temp gauges all register normal...

Happened again this morning. Lovely if slow drive in (hood down in the sub zero temps of course...), fan kicked in as soon as I parked. Sometimes, I could almost swaer the sensor is wired in back-to-front as it only comes on in the winter...

cheers all

This is exactly the same symptoms I have had for about 18 months. It was the only 'fault' the car had when it went in for it's big service and I did ask the "MG Specialist" to look at it. Unfortunately they proved completely incompetent broke a load of parts and didn't even attempt to fix that part. I am now fairly immune to it. Annoying when in traffic on a cold day though.

If thats the problem, then its 17 pounds for a new sensor from Rimmer.

Dont know how to test it though other than testbook, unless you can borrow a sensor from someone for a day or two.

Also, I noticed if you take out the bototm part of the ECU multiplug (the big one), the engine bay fan comes on (easy way to test your fan is working). I suppose there could be a loose conenction or something either in there, or more like on the fan itself? Perhaps?

Cheers Broon...I might rummage about, but have no idea where any of those parts are.....I'll go hunting for a page on the wobbly web that show how to find your sensor!

Thanks

 Yeah. Its a pic from Dieters site. MAybe the green coolant in Germany is a different colour to ours .

Mind you I had yellow/green reanault stuff in mine last time (stoopid renault garage) and it was kinda that colour, but out of the tank it looked more yellow.
