Is 225ish miles too little?

2139 Views 36 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  DarthRaiden
I've been talking to a couple people on here last night and from a 214 IS - 16v and petrol - I should be getting more than 225 miles per tank on average driving?

Something to consider might be that when a cone filter is attached to the car, my exhaust fumes run pretty lean (smells strong of fuel)! I hear that perhaps some attention to the coolant temp. sensor should be made, too.

Anything else I need to think about before I look into this?

Oh also, I'm not particularly heavy footed on the accelerator unless I feel like opening out the engine on some of Shropshire's finest roads (...I joke...)

Thanks for the forthcoming help guys!

Should definitely be getting more than that mate unless you boot it absolutely everywhere!

I don't boot it usually - I am but a poor student and I just about manage to maintain the car :p

Bet you never get lost with a name like that though.

I'm the same mate and I drive like a penis sometimes but still get 300 miles out of a tank :p not meaning to worry you lol.

Saying that, when it says it's empty it usually has about 12 litres left (don't quote me on that though, not the case in every 200/25/ZR. Also you often have to let the car sit still for a few minutes whilst the fuel guage decides how much petrol you actually have!

Could be a problem somewhere, not sure where.

I get 340miles out of my BRM

I mean I've noticed that my fuel gauge doesn't quite hit the top line on the meter but I still feel as though I'm losing a lot of fuel somewhere, I do make a lot of trips to college and back (20 miles give or take on a round trip) but like I said, I don't think something is quite right!

I might take it to my local garage for them to have a butchers soon.

Last time I filled my 200vi up I had done 360miles, needle on empty, fuel light on for the previous 30 miles and it still had 6 litres left in the tank.

Definately something wrong with only 225 miles to a tank. Has your car been serviced recently? Sounds like you need to investigate teh rich fuel mix as well.
Definately doesn't sound right mate, i'm getting at least 280 miles to a tank, and that is booting it down the motorway for 99% of it.
As I said on the other thread your coolant temp sensor is nodoubt suspect number one hear.

If after that it still runs poor then think about a good service and some work on the ignition system.
Definitely take it to be looked at mate. Big savings in the long term lol.

You're on top form today, 2nd witty retort (that i've noticed!) in 24 hours :)

Fuel light?? I don't have a fuel light, I tend to fill up when its just on the red. Plus I have a cone filter, and do boot it sometimes, on the track.
Fuel light is an add on circuit available from Technozen on this forum. Light comes on at 10 Litres left, so ideal if your gauge is wildly inaccurate.

I've read about this a few times. Does the warning light run off a different circuit / sensor to the main dial? Mine is a bit hit and miss tbh. Varies wildly depending on my driving.

Cheers, my gauge seems ok atm, hence why I always zero my trip everytime I fill up. Just in case it fails.

I'll have a look at that though.
I have a random method of knowing when i need to fill up. My zr always takes a lot of cranking to start when it is low on fuel. The harder it is to start the lower the fuel. If it's a total pain i get the gas depot sharpish! :) (wierd problem, still no wiser with it)
It is a single circuit board, with input signals coming from the back of the dash console, the wires come attached with the connectors, and this attaches on to the screws already on it holding the fuel gauge in place. The output is an LED, available in a choice of sizes, and with various lengths of wire available for placing the LED in a position of your choice. Really easy to fit.

Yep, fuel light.

I have one of Technozen's fuel light kits fitted ;) which starts to flash when approx 12 litres left, then stays on when down to 10 litres or so.

Sadly I haven't taken mine on track yet, and am unlikely to do so now as it's up for sale
Mine has more than just a cone filter on it yet still giving 36+mpg on a run

Even for someone who could kill a car by dodgy wiring /me points at myself ;) (killed an escort like that, had to take it out for it to work again0
