I read somewhere 1.6K engines were faster than VW 2.0l, you know, the engine fitted to the MKIII Golf GTI -115 hp-.

Yesterday, talking with a friend about cars, this stuff came on. Wrong!, he said, VW engine is faster than K series one. More poweful and more torquey...

Who was right?? Any ideas/facts?

Regards.

Mk3 216: 112 hp @ 6000 rpm, 145 Nm @ 3000 rpm, top 118 mph, 0-60: 9,2 sec, 40,8 mpg

Mk3 Golf 2.0 GTi: 115 hp @ 5400 rpm, 166 Nm @ 3200 rpm, top: 124 mph, 0-60 mph: 10,1 sec, 35,4 mpg

So the 1.6 K-series is less powerfull than the 2.0GTi, but quicker to 60 and better fuel economy.

Fact: Golf GTis are the fastest cars on the road, no questions asked - just ask any Golf GTi driver for their opinion if you don't believe me.

And what about this:

Rover 200 Vi: 0-60 mph in 7,9 sec

VW Golf Mk3 2.0 GTI: 0-60 mph in 10,1 sec
VW Golf Mk3 2.0 16 V GTI: 0-60 mph in 8,7 sec
VW Golf Mk4 1.8 GTI: 0-60 in 9,9 sec
VW Golf Mk4 1.8T GTI: 0-60 in 8,5 sec
VW Golf Mk4 2.0 GTI: 0-60 in 10,2 sec
VW Golf Mk4 2.3V5 GTI: 0-60 in 8,2 sec

What do you mean the GTI is the fastest car???? :naughty:

my mk3 216 kicks gti butt good and proper matey, i have had a few engine mods but nothing drastic. I love beating the new gti's as they are sooooooooooo cocky its unreal. And they only ever drive in the fast lane, ever. Bit like mundane-ohs oops sorry mondeo's :naughty:

I have a huge hatred for Golf so called 'GTIs'. The owners are such unjustifiably smug gits. My 216 kicks golf butt big time.. when i out drag them the look on the owners face is priceless !!
They are overpriced, overweight, overrated and over the hill.

I hang my head in shame. I just had a race with a Mk3 GTI (or was it a VR6) on Sunday. I guess I was a bit slow on the up take realising he wanted to race so he had the benefit of the initial acceleration. he wasn't exactly losing me but I wasn't getting any closer either. My coupe kept wheelspinning at 3k revs in second which didn't help. It's a non turbo lump I have.

Shame I had to turn off as at the next junction I would have whooped him into the ground :naughty:

why are you so against Vw's ??

its ok to like another brand of car, even if you dont own one.....

Ive had 3 MK2 GTI's, and they really good cars.

and i dont believe for a second that a 1.4k or a 1.6 honda engined Rover 200 or 400 would beat a MK2 16V in a straight line, and in standard form, certainly wouldnt beat it round the twists.

Just had my 216GSI 0 to 60 tested it came up as 8.4 seconds ( the car is just about standard, only an induction kit). This is about the same as a 16v mkII GTI. It was done properly not just with a stopwatch by the way. As for handling the golf is over rated, the 216 is a honda and hondas dont handle badly either !!
It not so much the cars i dont like as the attitiude of the drivers in them, they think they have something really special, in the case of the 8v GTI they just make me laugh !!
The honda D16 engine is a great engine and better than the VW engine anyday, although it does lack low end torque. At the top end there is no contest.

The simple answer is yes and no :D

on pickup, the golf will eat the 1.6 kseries.

Higher up the rev range you will catch the golf.

The end result will be about honours even.

This is MkIII 200 against MkIII golg.

I have.. each to his own i guess, i just find my car more alive
I've driven four Mk2's extensively. 2 x 1.6 cl's, a 8v GTi and a 16v GTi.

To be honest, the 8v was the best as it is a much more free reving engine than the 16v.

The Golf is an aquired driving position. You tend to feel like you are sitting quite high and I found all four felt heavy causing me to brake unnecessaraly into corners. The brakes are also strange. They feel like you are not braking until you push the pedal a bit harder and they try and stop on a penny. I drove the 8v after it had had uprated shocks and springs and this didn't help with the heavy feeling to the car.

If you have a carb version of the golf, the carb is a bad design and the engine is prone to cutting out and general running problems in winter. Trouble with the auto choke.

That said, I am sure people critisis the Rover too.
