l started thinking how essential it is to have the lock key handy and then proceeded not to find mine... Looked everywhere for it and still no luck. I then decided to make a key myself so l examined the offending locknut and saw that grip was obtained with a small diameter rod engaging into the nut.
I measured the nut with a vernier using a bit cut off an old screwdriver for the rod, and found the measurement led between the major and minor diameters of a 25/64 socket. Found 2, so its OK to wreck one if need be.
I taped the rod into the socket and GENTLY hammered it on and voila the nut loosened not using the impact wrench , it was done up to spec and the only trouble l had with the other three was l had to refit the rod into the socket with some masking tape a couple of times..

Oh yeah, in case you're wondering, l replaced the locnuts with 12x1.5 tapered seat metric nuts (available at the local tyre shop) for the time being.
