How much for new clutch and slave cylinder?

Hi all, my car broke down and was recovered by AA to garage, after diagnostics they said that the slave cylinder needed changing, the clutch kit needed changing as bearing seized up and damaged pressure plate, and they had to free off release arm. Ive got to use this garage now as its an AA garage and i have AA BRC cover. However the garage is quoting ÂŁ850 for the job, does this sound right? When i had clutch and gearbox done on 206 that only came to about ÂŁ350-ÂŁ400 so seems very steep to me? Could anyone let me know how much i should be looking to pay or how much they paid if had it done? thanks

The high cost is due to the rear sub frame needs dropping which is a lot more work than a normal front wheel drive car, having said that I only paid ÂŁ400 for mine to be done

I'd be more interested as to why they haven't pinned the exact fault down, if its just the slave thats an easy job about an hour at the most and that was putting a new seal kit in it (ÂŁ3.50) rather than paying for a full new unit

Clutch release arm if its sticking it can be eased of in most cases without removing the gearbox, by just using a good releasing oil

both of the above are easy jobs, so unless your actual clutch plate has gone there is no need to do it

It is possible but very far fetched, I would say its more likely that the slave cylinder has blown the seal, so either a new unit or a seal kit, orrrr the clutch pipe has a leak

The actual clutch lever they are saying is sticking are very difficult to move at the best of times but benifit from releasing oil

I would rather try both of them first before replacing the full clutch

Had the clutch been slipping before this happened??? if it was ok before this I would go with the above first

MGR Book time to do the clutch wwas about 7 hours - which is to cover the lengthy work as Jon described.

WHat I can't work out is how the clutch has been damaged if the releae arm is sticking. If that can't move then the clutch wont work. Plenty of cases that the release arm causes slave and or master cylinder to go. And unless a fair chunk of time with penetrating oil, the release arm can be difficult to get working again, but the clutch damamged by that - I can't see how.

The parts excluding teh clutch are pretty cheap
clutch release arm (improved in grease screw) ÂŁ35
slave seal ÂŁ3.50 (very rare a whole new cyl is required, but if it is they are about ÂŁ30 IIRC
but if the release arm does need replacing, the work is very similar to full clutch replacement, and if the clutch has a fair few miles on it, it might be sensible to replace at teh same time. But, only if teh release arm must be replaced.

ÂŁ850 is far to much. I had my slave go on me last year and paid ÂŁ180 (or somehwere around that mark) for it to be replaced, this year my clutch was slipping like crazy so I decided to have it replaced but opted to go for an AP racing clutch instead of an oem one. I paid ÂŁ175 for the clutch and another ÂŁ220 for the fitting so the total cost over two seperate visits (more labour charges) was ÂŁ575

No it wasnt slipping Jon, was fine before that then it just stopped working all together. And David they have said the master cylinder is ok but the rest are knackered. How much would it be for all that including a clutch kit? Im stuck now as the AA have took it there and know there saying they already stripped it out so gotta pay the labour! Its a joke really i wasnt even asked what garage to take it to! However because of the BRC i will only have to pay ÂŁ350 as they pay first ÂŁ500, is it worth doing then? I still think its wrong tho, if it was done for the ÂŁ400 i wouldnt have to pay anything! btw, there bill for slave cylinder as they tried that 1st, was about ÂŁ250 fitted, abit more than the ÂŁ30! Stay away from Mansfield group i think! I know if it breaks down again ill be telling the AA its not going anywhere near there!

Put it this way if you had got me to repair the old slave with a seal kit, and release the clutch arm I would have said about ÂŁ65 an that would include ÂŁ3.50 for seal kit, ÂŁ5 for new clutch fluid, ÂŁ25 for petrol return trip, releasing oil ÂŁ0.00

ÂŁ350 if thats what your having to pay isn't bad for a new clutch, clutch arm and slave, but I'd make sure you get the clutch arm with the grease point on it, as you can't just fit that at a later date without taking the gearbox out again

Just checked prices from an X-part dealer as mine were abit out of date
Kit-repair clutch slave cylinder - Genuine MG Rover UUB100180 ÂŁ5.93 - almost certainly all that was needed for the slave cylinder

Slave cylinder clutch - Genuine MG Rover UUB100040 ÂŁ75.68 (a bit more than I had remembered)
But,
Slave cylinder clutch - 3rd party good make UUB100040P ÂŁ36.25 (not far off my original price)
