my mgfv 1.6 2003 has just had head gasket done for the second time in a year .
every garage i take it to says "oh mg its the head gastek mrs " :-(
it runs smooth and quiet on standing but loses power and stalls when driving feels like its not getting fuel ( not that i understand cars at all ). points coil paks o2 sensor head gasket all done . no oil in the water . no over heating . garage that just done it says its at a loss now they have agreed ist not the head gasket !! it has till the end of the month on the tax .. so this is my last go at resuscitation . iv had two mg dealers say they will take it off me for a little more that scrap value >:-( . so im thinking they know what it is . can anyone help ?

I bet they'll take it off you for scrap value. If it is running worse straight after the work than it was before, then I would want the garage to either fix at no cost or refund.

Shouldn't go twice in a year, perhaps the head wasn't checked which is not a competent repair anyway.

Get one of the mobile mechanics to look at it.

where are you based?
As said, might be time to let one of the genius mobile mechanics near you take a look.
they know these cars inside out and provide a service second to none.

Don't let it go for scrap value for what could turn out to be a relatively inexpensive fix.

Edit: Forgot to say "Welcome to .org!"

Hello and welcome to the forum. You've picked a bad weekend to ask for help as a lot people are away for friends round London. As above, say where you are based and I'll keep an eye on your post and give it a bump until someone can give you some good advice.

Hi Just a thought If fuel /air mixture set up was altered in any way during repair work or timing is slightly out that would givethese symptoms - loss of power on increased engine speed. IMHO this doesn't sound indicative of head gasket ( which is always blamed!) Where in country are you? if you are a reasonable distance happy to help diagnose

Whereabouts are you.

There are some good mechanics around.

1. Russell - based in Kent but will travel nationwide (and even into Europe). www.mgroversolutions.com < be warned he likes lots of coffee and bacon sarnies!

2. Jon Norris - based in Rutland/Leicestershire but again will travel nationwide www.roughluckracing.com

3. MGF Reborn (pocket motors) - based in Poole and a fixed garage. You'll have to take the car to him www.mgfreborn.co.uk

4. Dave and Kayleigh - based in Stoke on Trent but will travel. http://www.dave-mgrovermobilemechanic.co.uk

All of these guys know their stuff and are well recommended by forum members. Give one of them a try and I bet they'll get you sorted quickly and cheaply.

Or it might not be getting enough air. The air filter could do with looking at although I doubt that could ever get sufficiently clogged to cause your symptoms. What could also cause air starvation is the catalytic converter internals collapsing and blocking the exhaust. It might let enough air through at idle but not when there's any real power demand.

In the same vein, it might be worth checking out the air mass metering sensor on your air intake - if it isn't reporting the actual amount of air entering the engine properly, the engine management system won't be able to meter out the correct amount of fuel and it might possibly cause your symptoms. You could easily check the connector going to it. Don't know how to check it is functioning though.
