hi folks,

just wondering if someone here can spread some light on a problem im having
with my 2001 1.8f .
Under hard throttle engine sounds as if there exhaust has fallen off and engine wont rev.
light throttle engine will rev and car will cruise at motorway speeds.
lifting off throttle and there is a rattle/vibration.
had exhaust checked out all okay, but mechanic suggested a collapsed cat,
same replaced made no difference.
50 miles later entering a roundabout rattle increased and engine died, unable to start ,turns over rapidly with rattle still there.

yours hopefully
andy

Is your engine a VVC?

When was the cam bet changed and was the tensioner changed with it?

Are the engine mounts OK?

It may not be the belt if its a new one but the belt tensioner may have collapsed if this wasn't changed at the same time.

I am not sure of any guides but I would take the plastic cam belt cover off to have a look at the state of the the belt and tensioner.

priced up parts (worst case all 16 valves) head bolts, belt kit & water pump but im sure ive seen something on this site about an uprated head gasket does anyone know where i can get one and how much, as the standard one is only £20.50+vat.

Info about the new gasket can be found here

I wouldn't order anything until you have taken the head off just in case it's taken the pistons with it.
