hey guys,

i was driving home last night from the beach and i noticed a quite ticking noise coming from the gearbox. it stops when the clutch is down of when i stop.

im just wondering how bad this actually is for the car. its not very loud.

im just a bit worried about my baby. its a rover 25 1.4

any help would be great, thanks

Not the release bearing, as then the noise would only be there with the clutch down. ;) Noise which goes quiet with clutch down normally means gearbox input shaft bearings, but I doubt it in this case.

When you say the noise stops when you stop, do you mean the noise still stops if you sit in neutral with the clutch up?

Have you tried letting the car idle, opening the bonnet, then revving the car while looking into the engine bay?

Sounds awfully like what happened to me.. i ended up needing a fully reconditioned gearbox cause i left it so long. If you can then i'd take it to a specialist to see if they know if its definitely your gearbox, the sooner u sort it the cheaper its likely to be
