Help! Lost my spanner!

Morning all, thought I'd take 20 mins out of my busy schedule to tighten my gear change (Gear Selector Adjustment - Petevick how to - MG-Rover.org Forums) and disaster has struck!

I dropped my spanner into the transmission tunnel and can't get it back (I can't even see it). The pictures should explain further:

I've removed the SRS ECU, but there's no way to access the transmission tunnel below it (there seems to be some sort of plate directly after the gear selector which you wouldn't get anything bigger than a spanner through)

Anyone know how to access this, without taking the car to pieces? :(

Magnet attatched to some stiff copper wire that you can feed in to the tunnel and wiggle about (technical decription ;)) and retrieve the spanner?
Failing that you might have to take off what seems like the 100 bolts holding in the small central under pan.

Is that the part that scrapes loudly on speedbumps?

Could give that a go - does anyone know whether Chrome Vadnium is magnetic before I rip a hard disk apart to get a magnet?
magnet invariably sticks to tunnel itself.

Best trick is to go in from the very back - ie pull out the cubby box. get a stip of plastic - curtain track or similar and tape magnet to TOP of that flush with front edge - ie so it can only stick to something in front of it and the plastic strip at the bottom offers little friction. then guide it along carefully from the cubby box hole, using fingers to guide it around gear linkage and onwards.

youd almost think Id had a similar prob wouldnt you ? ;)
Try a magnet on a spanner from the same set, but in a different size. Back of a speaker is magnetic too.
You can take the full linkage out without having to remove the tunnel if that will helps
my solicitors have suggested that I formally declare that I am not responsible in any way shape or form for loss of spanners or any other items whilst performing anything that I may or may not have posted on this or any other forum or web site on the interweb, this disclaimer also applies to bits of paper as well :D

Damnit, I was going to sue you for £2 to replace my spanner

Things I've learned:

  • My spanners are magnetic, but so is the majority of the transmission tunnel
  • We don't have any curtain tracks, anywhere in this house.
  • Xbox hard disks easily come apart with basic tools
No idea where the spanner is now, I think I may have just pushed it further towards the front of the car. Taking off the underpan looks like a non-starter as that's further back (seems to end at approx the handbrake lever)

My next plan is to put the parts back in that I need, then accelerate hard and hope it slides back towards me. But that's going to have to be tomorrow as I'm late for work

Buy a new spanner!:D
Actually, that raises another question... is anyone aware of anything in the transmission tunnel which could get jammed if a lost 10mm spanner was wedged into it?

The only thing that gets jammed in the tunnel and causes pain is your hand, I wouldnt worry about it, just get a new spanner but this time put a length of tape or string around it first

I'm not the sort of person who usually gives up, but I think I'll give up on this if Project Rapid Acceleration doesn't work. I just hope it doesn't rattle around too much - the last thing I need is another rattle or squeak!! :D
coathanger? straighten it out and hook the end (wiv a bit of insulation tape wrapped around the tip to prevent scratches), wedge it down the seam a draw it front to back............

.........Then when that doesn't work, buy another spanner!

nice move :coffee:
I dropped a heater knob down there when I changed my interior over (don’t ask).
I managed to (eventually) get it out using the coat hanger to manoeuvre the offending item and then a long screw driver with a lump of blu-tac stuck on the end to stab it and lift it out.
Good Luck!!

Tried it :( Also ordered a set of spanners on eBay incidentally!

I actually hadn't considered what I'll do when it (if it?) comes back into view, so that's a good suggestion, cheers!
maybe even better if your reversing down a slope
Have you tried lifting the car up and shaking it?
